GREENSBORO, N.C. - Matt Foxx's first collegiate goal came with 4:44 to play and lifted UNC Greensboro past Longwood, 1-0, in the final match of the 2009 UNCG Kickoff Classic on Sunday afternoon.
In the first match of the afternoon, Elon earned its first win of the season, defeating Marshall, 2-0.
Elon got a pair of first half goals and made them hold up. The first goal came from Brad Franks 21 minutes into the match. He hit a low, skidder from nearly 30 yards out that skipped just inside of the near post for a 1-0 Phoenix lead.
Steven Kinney added an unassisted goal with 1:04 left before halftime. He intercepted a Thundering Herd pass, dribbled three times and unleashed a rocket from 25 yards out that beat goalkeeper Daniel Withrow.
Clint Irwin had two saves for Elon in recording his second shutout of the weekend.
UNCG (1-2-1) also picked up its first win of the season, thanks to three shutout goalkeeping by Nate Berry and Foxx's first career tally. Midway through the second half, Berry kept the game scoreless when he just got enough of a hand on Chris Saul's shot. The ball went off of Berry's left hand and deflected off the far post.
Foxx's goal came after Sven Picton played a ball from left wing high into the air. Foxx and goalkeeper Joel Helmick both went up for the ball and Foxx got just a little higher to get a piece of it and knock it into the goal for what would be the only tally of the afternoon.
UNCG outshot the Lancers, 17-8, for the match and had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday night when they host James Madison for a 7 p.m. match.
