STATESBORO, Ga. – Six different Spartans scored as UNCG snapped a three-game losing skid and rolled to a 6-1 win over Georgia Southern in Southern Conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans (5-5-1, 1-1-0) hung a six-spot on the Eagles for the second consecutive year and won for the first time since 2004 in Statesboro. UNCG won in Greensboro last year, 6-0. The win was UNCG's most lopsided road win since beating High Point, 6-1, in the 2005 season.
Georgia Southern lost its fourth straight, falling 3-6-1 overall and 0-3-0 in league play.
Hakan Ilhan and Michael Bonilla scored in the first half to give UNCG a 2-0 lead. Ilhan scored at 20:48 off a Brian Graham feed, while Bonilla scored off of Ilhan's pass a little over five minutes later.
Graham scored unassisted at 54:58 to give UNCG a three-goal advantage and the Spartans built from there. Fannar Arnarsson's tally off of a rebound at 63:39 gave the Spartans a four-goal lead.
Hunter Norton scored for the Eagles a little over six minutes later, but the Spartans tacked on two goals in the final six minutes. Adam Shore scored off of a Cruz Oronos feed with 5:52 lead to make it 5-1. Oronos then fed Oddur Gudmundsson with 49 seconds left to close out the scoring.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday night when they host College of Charleston at 7 p.m.
