Williams, Maryland prove too much for UNCG on the road

Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Jordan Williams had the lone double-double of the game for Maryland and the Terrapins had three other players in double figures as UNCG fell on the road, 99-56, on Wednesday night in the Comcast Center.

Williams led Maryland (7-3) the entire way as he scored a game-high 23 points and added 13 rebounds. Terrell Stoglin and Adrian Bowie were also in double figures with 18 and 16 points, respectively, while Cliff Tucker chipped in 13.

Sophomore Kyle Randall paced the Spartans (0-8) as he had 18 points, while dishing out seven assists. Aloysius Henry was the other Spartan in double figures with 11 points and had a team-high eight rebounds. It was the seventh time this season that Henry has posted a double-digit scoring effort.

"We battled early and we had a stretch where we had a chance to cut it in the middle of the first half. We've been down a lot to a lot of good teams," said coach Mike Dement. "I think that [Jordan] Williams was tough inside and [Terrell] Stoglin was really good. I thought that we got pretty good shots at times and had we made those shots we could've kept our fight and our spirit up a little bit.

"We played a game on Monday night, a tough and emotional loss, and took exams today. That's not an excuse, but at the same time the environment that we are in right this second isn't conducive to competing against an ACC team, especially with 24 hours of preparation."

The Spartans held with the Terrapins in the early going as a Randall layup made it a 10-6 game just over four minutes into the contest.

A pair of free throws by Stoglin push the Maryland lead to 10 points with 10:38 remaining, but UNCG came right back with a 3-pointer from Brandon Evans and a layup by David Williams to make it 22-17 with 9:53 left in the first half.

The Terrapins responded though with an 11-0 run minutes later to make it a 17-point game with just under seven minutes left before halftime.

Leading 49-31 at the break, Maryland built upon its lead right out of the locker room as the Terrapins opened the half on a 13-2 to give themselves a 62-33 advantage. The Spartans weren't able to cut the lead below 25 the rest of the game.

Maryland dominated the paint all night as it outscored the Spartans 54-22 in that area and also received 38 points off of the bench.

The Spartans will continue their three-game ACC road trip on Wednesday Dec. 15 at Wake Forest.
