Ben Stywall earned all-conference honors on Wednesday in the balloting of the league's
coaching.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Senior forward Ben Stywall was named to the Southern Conference's 10-person men's basketball all-conference squad and Kyle Randall was named to the All-Freshman squad in voting by the league's coaches on Wednesday.
Stywall was joined on the all-conference squad by Donald Sims of Appalachian State, Andrew Goudelock and Jeremy Simmons of College of Charleston, Cameron Wells from The Citadel, Amu Saaka of Furman, Georgia Southern's Willie Powers, Brandon Giles of Western Carolina, and Wofford's duo of Tim Johnson and Noah Dahlman.
Dahlman was named the league's Player of the Year, while Wofford coach Mike Young was named Coach of the Year. Simmons and Waginger were named Co-Defensive Player of the Year, while Davidson freshman JP Kuhlman was named Freshman of the Year.
Stywall, a native of Charlotte, N.C., is seventh in the league in scoring at 14.5 points per game and leads the league in rebounding at 10.3 rebounds per game. He has had a double-double in 11 of 18 league games this season and has 14 double-doubles for the year, tying Kyle Hines' single-season mark. He has set a school mark for rebounds in a season with 300 thus far. If he winds up averaging in a double-double, he would be the first Spartan to do so and the first player in the SoCon since 2000-01.
Randall, a native of Youngstown, Ohio, was joined on the All-Freshman squad by Kuhlman and Davidson's Jake Cohen, College of Charleston's Willis Hall and The Citadel's Harrison DuPont. Randall is averaging 9.4 points and 3.0 rebounds per game this season. He averaged 10.7 points per game in Southern Conference play.
The Spartans open conference tournament play on Friday at approximately 4:30 p.m. UNCG, seeded No. 4 in the North Division, faces the South Division's No. 5 seed Furman in an opening round game.
