ELON, N.C. – Aaron Reifschneider and Adam Shore both scored their first collegiate goals and Peyton Ford logged his first shutout of the season as UNCG defeated Richmond, 2-0, in men's soccer action at the Elon Classic on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Spartans moved back to .500 on the year at 2-2-0. Richmond dropped to 1-2-1 on the year with its second straight setback.
"Obviously we are happier with this outcome," said UNCG interim head coach Justin Maullin. "I thought we did a much better job of playing together as a team this afternoon. That was something we talked a lot about at practice yesterday and again before today's match."
UNCG came out aggressive and jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Reifschneider, a freshman from Frisco, Texas, hit a shot from 12 yards out for an unassisted tally to give the Spartans the early advantage.

UNCG outshot Richmond 6-1 in the opening half and controlled play for most of the first 45 minutes.
Midway through the second half, Shore provided some insurance. Matt Strine served the ball into Shore from near midfield. Shore, a redshirt freshman from Summerfield, N.C. who saw extended field time on Sunday due to several injuries, made a brief run through the defense and then tucked the ball just inside the far post from 15 yards out. The tally at 65:59 made it a 2-0 game.
Ford, a redshirt sophomore from Jamestown, N.C., recorded one save in logging the shutout. It was his first shutout this season and the fourth of his career.
UNCG wound up with a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon.
UNCG's Kris Byrd, Trey Johnson and Matt Strine were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Spartans return home to begin a four-match homestand on Wednesday. UNCG will play host to William & Mary on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
