Storylines:
• UNCG will look to make it four wins in a row for the first time since 2008 on Thursday as the Spartans hit the road to face Chattanooga on Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will mark just the second time that the Spartans have played on the road since Dec. 19. The only other time was a 75-74 win at Appalachian State on Jan. 13.
• The Mocs lead the all-time series against the Spartans, 17-10, dating back to 1991. Back on Jan. 8, UNCG hosted Chattanooga and fell narrowly, 70-65. The Spartans scored 13 straight points to start the second half and tie the game at 40. The teams were tied at 63 with 1:34 left in the game, but the Mocs closed out the game on a 7-2 run to win the game. Last season, the teams split their two meetings, with each team winning on their home floor.
• Chattanooga comes into the game having lost its last two contests. The Mocs started the season a perfect 7-0 in the Southern Conference, but fell to Wofford (88-56) and Furman (85-59) on the road last week. Chattanooga is still atop the North Division standings at 7-2, two and a half games ahead of Western Carolina (4-4).
• Last Thursday, the Spartans ran their winning streak to three games with an 87-75 win at home against Georgia Southern. UNCG had five players in double figures for the first time since Jan. 9 of last year against Furman. It marked the first time UNCG has won three games in a row since winning five straight towards the end of the 2007-08 season.
• Back on Jan. 17, UNCG won its second game in a row as it defeated Davidson 77-69. Trevis Simpson broke the UNCG record for scoring by a freshman in the Division I era as he posted a career-high 33 points on 12-15 shooting. Aaron Brackett was also in double figures with 11 points and added eight rebounds.
• On Jan. 13, the Spartans went up the mountain to Appalachian State and broke through for their first win of the season, 75-74. Although the Spartans led for over the final five minutes, they had to come up with three defensive stops in the last 24 seconds to come out on top. Junior Aaron Brackett had a career night as he posted 28 points and 15 rebounds, while senior Brandon Evans added 18. Brian Cole was also in double figures with 10 points for UNCG.
• UNCG was winless in its first 15 outings this season after facing six ACC opponents and very tough teams in Richmond and VCU. The 0-15 start by the Spartans marked the worst start in school history, breaking the record set by the 1967-68 and 1968-69 teams, which both started 0-7.
• Junior College transfer Aloysius Henry has provided an immediate spark in the post for the Spartans. He currently leads the team in scoring (10.4 ppg) and is also first in rebounding (5.8 rpg), while shooting 44.5% from the field.
• The Spartans have had a considerably new look over the last two seasons. In fact, just one person in uniform today was in uniform in the 2008-09 opener at Charlotte – Elhanan Bone. Brandon Evans was sitting out after transferring from East Carolina and Darrius Sellers was injured.
