FAIRFAX, Va. – UNCG defeated High Point in four sets in its first match of the day, but fell to host George Mason in the nightcap on Saturday at the Patriot Invitational
The Spartans defeated the Panthers 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 13-25, 26-24) before falling to the Patriots later in the day 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 25-27, 26-24).
Against High Point, Karrian Chambers led the Spartans with a match-high 15 kills and she added 11 digs for a double-double and Ariel Newman added 10 kills and 19 digs for a double-double of her own. Ari Lysacek had a double-double of her own with 24 assists and 14 digs.
The Panthers were led by Courtney Johnk who had 10 kills, while Stephanie Kaminskas had a double-double with 33 assists and 11 digs.
UNCG came storming out of the gates to take a 12-4 lead in the opening set. High Point rebounded to cut the Spartan lead down to 17-14 late in the set, but UNCG held on to win the set, 25-18.
The second set was much closer as the two sides were knotted at 11 in the early going. After holding a slim 19-18 lead later in the set, UNCG went on to win the set, 25-21, on a block by Morgan Freeman and Kelsey Sidney.
High Point took control coming out of the break by jumping out to a commanding 20-9 lead. The Panthers would get a kill from Kristin Heldt to take the set, 25-13, and cut the Spartan lead down to 2-1.
UNCG was finally able to finish off the Panthers in the fourth set by a narrow 26-24 margin. The Spartans had match point at 24-20, but High Point rattled off four-straight points to tie the set at 24. A kill by Newman and an attack error by High Point gave UNCG the set and the match, 3-1.
In their final match of the day, the Spartans were led by Newman who had a match-high 20 kills and had a .391 hitting percentage. She also had 20 digs for a double-double, while sophomore Morgan Freeman contributed 10 kills.
The two teams traded points in the first set as they were tied at 12 before the Patriots went on a 6-1 run to take an 18-13 lead. George Mason would go on to win the set 25-20 to take the early team lead.
The Patriots would take a 2-0 lead into intermission after claiming the second set, 25-21. They jumped out to an incredible 18-5 lead before the Spartans called a timeout. UNCG regrouped during the timeout and cut the lead down to 21-18, but the Patriots were able to win the set on a block by Danielle Cook and Tori Price.
After intermission, the two teams continued the close play as they were tied at 23 late in the third set. George Mason had set point, but UNCG scored a pair of points of its own to take a 25-24 lead. After a Patriot kill tied the set, the Spartans had a pair of blocks to win the set, 27-25.
The fourth and final set saw an incredible 16 ties and five lead changes. After the sides were tied at 24 late in the set, the Patriots got a block and then a kill from Kelsey Bohman to win the set, 26-24, and the match, 3-1.
UNCG will wrap up its stay at the Patriot Invitational on Sunday as it faces Navy at 11 a.m.
