GREENSBORO, N.C. –
The UNCG women's soccer team falls just short against Georgia Southern, 1-0, in the Southern Conference quarterfinals Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Nora El-Shami scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute for the Eagles.

"This is a tough one as this is Deja-Vu from last season," said head coach Steve Nugent. "I want to give Georgia Southern a lot of credit, you have to put the ball into the back of the net and we didn't do it. Their goalie made a couple of game saving saves. For our kids, our hearts really hurt for our six seniors who will be leaving us."

UNCG finished the 2012 season with a 12-7-1 overall record and captured its ninth SoCon regular season title. Georgia Southern ended the Spartans six-game winning streak and the first time UNCG had been scored on in 677 minutes of action. The 1-0 victory for the Eagles is the second-straight season that the Spartans have been eliminated by Georgia Southern at the UNCG soccer stadium.

With just under two minutes left, Georgia Southern got a breakaway to Nora El-Shami who fired a shot that UNCG goalkeeper
Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) got a piece of before going into the back of the net.

In the first half, UNCG remained scoreless against Georgia Southern after only allowing one shot from the Eagles. In the 13th minute, freshman Katherine Rodriguez (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) took a shot on goal but Katie Merson made the save.

In the second half, UNCG had a great opportunity in the 60th minute as senior Stephanie Partenheimer (Apex, N.C./Apex) launched a shot from outside the box and Merson made a diving save.

UNCG would continue to get opportunities with six corners in the second half but the Spartans could not convert. The Blue and Gold finished the game with 12 shots and 10 corners while holding Georgia Southern to just five shots.

It also marks the final game for six UNCG seniors in Lauren Hein (Torrance, Calif./South Torrance), Karin Sendel (Kiryat Tivon, Israel/Ort Kiryat Bialik), Cat Barnekow (Santa Rosa, Calif./Santa Rosa), Tinna Bergthorsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn Vid Sund), Jessi Gulledge (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) and Partenheimer.
