Men's Basketball Hosts Spartan Showcase Friday-Sunday - Six Games Total

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's basketball team returns home to the Greensboro Coliseum this weekend and hosts the Spartan Showcase, which features four NCAA Division I teams playing a round robin event with six total games Friday-Sunday. Joining the Spartans in the Spartan Showcase are Navy, IPFW and Jacksonville.

All UNCG games will be broadcast on the SoCon Digital Network with links available at www.uncgspartans.com. Additionally, the Spartans' games will be broadcast on 1320 WCOG AM and online via Tune In with Scott Pryzwansky and Darryl Kosciak providing the call. Basketball fans cane purchase an all-session pass for all six games for just $24 dollars.

The Spartans enter the weekend with a 2-1 record on the year after opening the season with back-to-back wins over Greensboro College and Chowan before falling most recently against UCF. UNCG is averaging 73.7 points per game this season as five different players are averaging double figures and eight different Spartans are averaging at least 7.0 points per game.

Sophomore guard Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) leads the Spartans in scoring at 12.3 points per game while tied for second on the team on the glass at 6.0 rebounds per game. Smith is shooting 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from 3-point land but has also gone to the free throw line a team-high 13 times this season.

Senior forward Kayel Locke (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) is tied for second on the team in scoring at 11.7 points per game while grabbing 6.0 rebounds per game. Junior guard Clay Byrd (Connelly Springs, N.C./East Burke) is averaging 11.7 points per game and has hit a team-high 11 3-pointers this year. Byrd is shooting 47.8 percent from long range this year.

Junior center R.J. White (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) adds 11.3 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game. White is shooting 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from the field. Freshman Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy) rounds out the Spartans in double figures scoring at 10.3 points per game. Junior guard Diante Baldwin (Greensboro, N.C./High Point Christian) leads the team with 15 assists and on the glass at 7.0 rebounds per game while averaging 8.7 points per game.

Additionally, the Spartans received a boost Wednesday afternoon as freshman guard Demetrius Troy (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) was officially cleared by the NCAA. Troy missed the first three games of the year awaiting NCAA clearance. Troy earned First Team All-State honors as a senior when he averaged 23.5 points, 4.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game

Navy, the Spartans' first opponent, enters the weekend with a 3-2 record on the year. The Midshipmen opened the season with back-to-back losses to Florida and the College of Charleston. Navy has won three straight with wins over USC Upstate, Goucher and most recently UMBC. Shawn Anderson leads the team in scoring at 13.4 points per game while Jace Hogan is second at 11.3 points per game.

IPFW enters the weekend with a 4-1 record on the season. The Mastodons opened the year with a loss at Valparaiso before winning the last four games with wins over Manchester, Austin Peay, SIU Edwardsville and most recently Miami University. IPFW is averaging 74.6 points per game with Mo Evans leading the way at 14.2 points per game, including 10 3-pointers. Max Landis adds 13.2 points per game while John Konchar adds 13.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.

Jacksonville enters the weekend 2-2 overall record after posting wins against Florida College and Thomas College while dropping games against Appalachian State and Florida State. The Dolphins are averaging 80.0 points per game this year with Marcel White leading the team with 21.0 points per game and Kori Babineaux adding 20.0 points per game.
