GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis team will begin Southern Conference action on the road at Mercer Wednesday, March 11 at 1 p.m. and a road match at Samford Friday, March 13 at 4 p.m. this week.
The Spartans are 4-4 on the season after dropping two straight close 4-3 matches last weekend against Winthrop and Georgia Southern. Freshman Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) has a 7-1 record in singles and is a perfect 3-0 at No. 5 singles. Senior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) is also 7-1 playing all eight single matches at No. 1 singles. The Snellville, Ga. native leads the team with a 16-5 overall record that includes fall matches.
Junior Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) didn't play over the weekend but is 4-1 with a 2-0 record at No. 6 singles.
In doubles, Phillips and Thompson are 5-2 at No. 1 doubles and have won two-straight matches.
Mercer is 6-8 on the season with wins against Southern Illinois (W, 4-3), Gardner-Webb (W, 5-2), Kennesaw State (W, 6-1), Alabama State (W, 7-0), New Mexico (W, 5-2) and Georgia Southwestern (W, 6-1).
Samford is 5-6 on the season and holds victories against UAB (W, 5-2), Lipscomb (W, 4-3), Northern Kentucky (W, 6-0), Eastern Kentucky (W, 6-1) and Jackson State (W, 7-0). Fares Kilani is 5-5 at No. 1 singles and Austin Akers is 5-5 at No. 2 singles. Jake Faundez leads the team with a 7-2 record at No. 6 singles. Lourido Sanchez and Kilani hold a team-leading 6-3 doubles record at No. 3 doubles.
