GREENSBORO, N.C. – After playing five-straight games on the road and seven of its last eight games away from home, the UNCG men's basketball team returns home to the Greensboro Coliseum Tuesday night as the Spartans host Furman in Southern Conference action at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed for free in full HD on the SoCon Digital Network with links at www.uncgspartans.com. Additionally, the game will be broadcast on 1320 WCOG AM and online via Tune In with Scott Pryzwansky and Darryl Kosciak providing the call.
The Spartans have four players averaging double figures and five players averaging at least 9.0 points per game. Junior center R.J. White (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) has taken over the scoring lead at 11.4 points per game while also leading the team on the glass with 6.5 rebounds per game. White is shooting 60 percent (63-of-105) from the field and is coming off a 19-point effort at Wofford. He has scored in double figures in seven of the last eight games, averaging 12.8 points per game during that stretch.
Senior forward Kayel Locke (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) is second on the team in scoring at 11.2 points per game and tied for third on the team on the glass, grabbing 5.0 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy) leads the team with 34 3-pointers and is third on the team in scoring at 11.2 points per game. Alonso is shooting 42.5 percent (34-of-80) from distance.
Junior guard Diante Baldwin (Greensboro, N.C./High Point Christian) rounds out the double figure scorers at 10.8 points per game. Baldwin leads the team with 60 assists and 27 steals while ranking second on the glass with 5.1 caroms per game. Sophomore forward Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) adds 9.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
The Spartans hold a 4-10 record on the year with five straight losses, as they are 0-8 on the road but 4-2 at home this year. The Spartans are averaging 69.4 points per game and allowing opponents to score 73.3 points per game. UNCG is shooting 42.8 percent (366-of-855) from the field and 34.1 percent (118-of-346) from 3-point land.
Furman enters Tuesday's game with a 7-7 overall record and a 1-0 mark in Southern Conference play. The Paladins are coming off an 85-57 victory at home over VMI, snapping a three-game losing streak. Furman had lost consecutive games to Dayton, Nay and UNC Asheville. The Paladins are averaging 70.0 points per game while holding opponents to 63.2 points per game, the second-lowest mark in the SoCon.
Stephen Croone, a preseason All-SoCon selection, is the only Paladin averaging double figures scoring at 14.5 points per game and is second on the team with 30 assists. Matt Rafferty leads the team and the SoCon on the glass, grabbing 8.1 rebounds per game. Rafferty is second on the team in scoring at 9.7 points per game while shooting 51.1 percent (48-of-94) from the field.
Devin Sibley, the reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year, is third on the team in scoring at 8.5 points per game and is tied for the team lead with 14 3-pointers. Kris Acox adds 8.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game while Daniel Fowler chips in 6.6 points and 4.6 reb
Tuesday marks the 27th meeting all-time between UNCG and Furman. The all-time series is tied 13-13 between the teams with the Spartans winning three out of the last four meetings. Last year, the teams split the season series with the home team victories in each meeting. Furman posted a 71-64 victory in Greenville in January before the Spartans recorded an 84-49 victory at the Greensboro Coliseum in February. The 35-point victory was the Spartans' largest victory in Southern Conference play in program history.
Last season, the Spartans connected on 46.8 percent (58-of-124) from the field against the Paladins and 46.3 percent (19-of-41) from 3-point land, including a season-high 15 3-pointers in the victory in Greensboro. Locke led the Spartans with 15.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game against Furman while White averaged 14.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. White connected on 4-of-4 from long range in the Spartans' victory over Furman.
The Paladins connected on 39.8 percent (37-of-93) from the field and 25.6 percent (10-of-39) from long range in the two games. Furman went to the free throw line 52 times against UNCG while the Spartans only made 24 trips to the line. Geoff Beans led the way with 15.0 points per game while Devin Sibley and Stephen Croone each averaged 13.0 points per game.
