GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG freshman men's golfer Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) turned in the best round of his young career Sunday afternoon to the lead the Spartans in round one of the prestigious Linger Longer Invitational hosted by Kennesaw State at the Great Waters course at Reynolds Lake. Round two is set for Monday with tee times from 9:30-10:10 a.m. from hole No. 1. Live scoring will be available via www.golfstatresults.com.
Hendrix sits in a tie for third place overall at the Linger Longer after carding a career-best 6-under par 66. His 66 score is the lowest round of any Spartan this year and is tied for the eighth best round in UNCG men's golf history with 10 other players. He was strong throughout the round with seven birdies, one bogey and 10 par scores. He was especially strong down the stretch, recording five birdies in his last nine holes (holes No. 1-9). He is tied with Frederik Nilehn of Kennesaw State and just one stroke behind co-leaders Matthew Perrine of Baylor and Luis Fernando Barco of Purdue (7-under, 65).
The 13-team field features 11 top 100 teams and four teams ranked in the top 25. Joining the 66th-ranked Spartans include No. 2 Georgia, No. 12 Alabama, No. 21 Virginia, No. 25 Purdue, No. 26 Baylor, No. 39 Augusta, No. 55 Louisville, No. 61 Kennesaw State, No. 78 Missouri, No. 82 Charlotte, South Alabama and Mercer.
No. 25 Purdue holds the overall lead after round one with an impressive 11-under par 277. The Spartans are in eighth place overall after recording a 1-under par 287. The top seven teams consisted of six teams ranked in the top 40 and tournament host Kennesaw State.
Junior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) sits in a tie for 29th place overall after carding an even-par 72. McGlone posted three birdies, three bogeys and 12 par scores, including two birdies in his last four holes. Sophomore Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) notched a 2-over par 74 to sit in 42nd place overall. Stockwell tallied three birdies, five bogeys and nine par scores on the day.
Senior Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) finished the day 3-over par 75 as he recorded three birdies on the afternoon to sit in 50th place. Senior Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) rounded out the lineup with a 5-over par 77 to finish in 62nd after one round.
