Softball Goes Yard Five Times a Pair of Sunday Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team (10-9) bounced back with a pair of Sunday wins over Brown (7-3) and North Carolina Central (0-16) in the final day of the annual Spartan Classic. UNCG scored 18 runs throughout the twin bill and tallied five home runs while averaging .327 at the plate. The Spartans will have two day's rest before welcoming Appalachian State (4-15) Wednesday for their first mid-week meeting of the season.

Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) and Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) combined for four of UNCG's five home runs on the day and eight of UNCG's hits.

In the first game, Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) earned the complete game victory allowing just one run on five hits. She fanned three batters in six innings allowing just one Bear to reach base on balls.

Brown scored its only run in the top of the first inning but UNCG immediately responded in the bottom half of the frame when L. Thomas led off with a solo home run and Sidney Grkman (Salisbury, N.C./Jesse Carson) drove in a run with a single up the middle. The Spartans added three more runs in the bottom of the second on four hits for a 5-1 lead.

UNCG tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead 7-1 and ended the game in the bottom of the six when back-to-back RBI doubles from Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) and Tory Wright (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) added three more runs for the Spartans.

UNCG improves to 2-1 all-time against Brown and 4-2 against Ivy League opponents.

The Spartans got off to a rocky start in game two against NCCU. The Eagles took an early 2-0 lead but UNCG answered back with one run when N. Thomas reached on a fielding error by NCCU's shortstop that scored her sister L. Thomas. NC Central tied added a run in the top of the second inning to quickly regain a two-run lead. But UNCG had monster bottom half of the inning scoring five runs on four hits to take its first lead of the game, 6-3.

Both L. Thomas and N. Thomas hit home runs in the second inning for UNCG marking the second time in their careers they had done so. The first time it happened was April 26, 2014.

The Lady Eagles plated a pair of runs in the top of the third inning and another in the fourth the tie the game 6-all.

Danica Bishop (Irvine, Calif./Nebraska) came in to relieve Lacey Leary (Norwood, N.C./Spartanburg Methodist), in the fourth inning, after she tossed three and one third innings. Leary allowed six runs, four earned, on nine hits in her first start of the season.

UNCG took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run by N. Thomas. It marked the fourth multi-home run game of her career and first this season. She had a career-high three home runs against Gardner Webb March 11, 2014, and has previously recorded two home run games on twice more.

Grkman refused to be left out of the scoring spree and sent a ball over the center field fence in the bottom of the fifth for a UNCG insurance run and 8-6 lead.

Bishop went on to record her first win of the season allowing just two hits in three and two thirds innings of work. She struck out a career-high six batters of the 14 she faced, twice retiring the Eagles on back-to-back strikeouts.

UNCG will look ahead to face the Mountaineers of App State Wednesday in a non-conference double header. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
