Box Score Columbia, S.C. – The UNCG women's soccer team (3-5-1) went head-to-head with one of the nation's top teams in No. 14 South Carolina before falling 3-0 Thursday night at Stone Stadium. The Gamecocks extend their win streak to seven games while UNCG now looks to snap a four-match losing streak Sunday when they take on ECU in Greenville, N.C.
The Gamecocks scored all three goals in the first half. Dominique Babbitt scored the first goal in the 11th minute from the top of the box off a deflection. Chelsea Drennan scored the next two goals for USC in the 25th and 36th minute. Kaleigh Kurtz was credited with the assist on both goals by Drennan, which coincidentally came off throw-ins.
Chloe Buehler (Perrysburg, Ohio/Penn State) tallied six saves in the loss as she logged a complete game for the Spartans. Defenders Gabbi Charles (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) and Melanie Spensiero (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) along with midfielders Georgia Brown (Queenstown, New Zealand/St. Hilda's Collegiate) and Regan Lehman (Wilmington, Del./Padua Academy) played a complete 90 minutes for UNCG.
South Carolina outshot UNCG 28-3 and held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks. Caylin Prillaman (High Point, N.C./Wesleyan Christian Academy) accounted for two of UNCG's shots. Hunter Peifer earned the win in goal for USC playing the complete game and earning a shutout, while not making a save.
The Gamecocks improve to 4-1 all-time against UNCG and have won the last four meetings.
UNCG returns to action Sunday, September 18, for the final non-conference match of the season when the Spartans travel to Greenville, N.C., to face ECU. Kickoff vs. the Pirates is slated for 2 p.m.
