SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG softball's Marisa Sholtes was named Southern Conference Player of the Week, the leagued announced Monday afternoon. Sholtes helped the Spartans to a 6-5 win over Campbell in nine innings last Wednesday and a series win at NC State over the weekend, including a 24-2 victory in five innings in the finale.
Sholtes lead the team in seven batting categories on the week, including a .647 on-base percentage, 1.231 slugging percentage and nine RBIs. She started the week with one hit, one RBI and one run against Campbell and then crushed the ball in all three games against NC State. In the 5-4 win over NC State, she homered twice with three RBIs and a walk. The next game she went 1-2 with a double and hit by pitch. In the series finale she went 3-4 with five RBIs, three runs, two doubles and a walk.
The Spartans have now earned eight conference weekly awards this season, tying with Furman as the most in the SoCon. Sholtes has attained the award twice this season, and Makenna Matthijs leads the way with three. Stephanie Bryden has won pitcher of the week twice while Alicia Bazonski garnered the award once.
UNCG ends the regular season with its last SoCon weekend series at Samford, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m.
