Women's Soccer Takes on Richmond and UNCW in Homestand

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women's soccer will face both Richmond and UNCW at UNCG Soccer Stadium this weekend. The Spartans will take on the Spiders first on Friday at 7 p.m. and then the Seahawks Sunday at 2 p.m.

Both games will be streamed live on the SoCon Digital Network. Links for the stream and live stats are available at UNCGSpartans.com.

Gameday Promotions

  • At halftime for every home game this season will be the Taco Mama's Crossbar Challenge, where each winner can receive up to a $100 gift card.

All-Time Series Vs. Richmond

  • Richmond won the only game between the two schools 4-0 at home on Sept. 1, 1999.

All-Time Series Vs. UNCW

  • UNCG has won all three meetings against UNCW, one each at home, on the road and a neutral site.
  • The last victory (2-0) came on Sept. 2, 2013 in the season before head coach Michael Coll arrived to Greensboro.

Scouting UNCG

  • Opened the regular season with a 2-1 home win over Gardner-Webb last Friday and 0-0 tie at Elon last Sunday
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper was named Southern Conference Player of the Week Tuesday. Playing all 200 minutes, Tyler-Cooper recorded a .900 save percentage and 0.45 goals against average for the weekend.
  • Freshman forward Isabelle Blomdahl scored her first collegiate goal and UNCG's first of the season, while redshirt-sophomore forward/midfielder Kaley Tucker notched the game-winner.
  • The reigning Southern Conference Tournament Champion received the most first-place votes with five in the SoCon Coaches' Preseason Poll and was selected to finish second.
  • Placed a league-high three players on the preseason all-conference team: junior forward/midfielder Cienna Rideout, senior midfielder Heida Ragney Vidarsdottir and senior defender Emily Jensen.
  • The three all-league preseason selections are the most for UNCG since 2011 when the program had four players picked for the preseason honor.
  • Jensen earned first-team All-SoCon honors last season, helping the Spartans record nine shutouts as a team and finishing second on the team in scoring with 12 points (five goals and two assists).
  • Vidarsdottir garnered second-team All-SoCon last year, scoring two goals and dishing out an assist.
  • Rideout led the team last year in points (16) and goals (seven), scoring all but one of her goals in the last five games of the season.
  • Tyler-Cooper led the SoCon last season in save percentage (.848), was second in saves (106) and shutouts (eight) and third in goals against average (0.94) last year to go along with a 10-7-3 record.
  • Return 15 letterwinners, seven starters and 83 percent of the goal production and welcome 12 newcomers, all freshmen.
  • Outscored opponents (Winthrop and James Madison) 4-0 in the preseason.

Last Time Out-UNCG

  • UNCG played Elon to a 0-0 tie on the road Sunday in a game that was delayed more than an hour due to lightning.
  • UNCG had the only three shots on goal in the two overtime periods.
  • Elon put early pressure on Tyler-Cooper in the second half. She made six of her seven saves in the game on 10 shots by the Phoenix in the half.
  • The Phoenix had a 22-11 shots advantage, but both teams placed seven shots on goal. The Spartans had the edge in corner kicks, 5-4.
  • Scouting Richmond
  • Dropped first two games of the year on the road to two opponents on UNCG's schedule this year, Furman (3-1) last Friday and Longwood (4-0) last Sunday.
  • Seven of the first nine games for the Spiders are on the road.
  • Freshman defender Molly Morgan has the only goal of the year so far for Richmond in the second half trailing Furman 3-0.
  • Picked to finish 11th in the Atlantic 10 Conference Preseason Poll.
  • Head coach Marty Beall is in his first year at Richmond after spending nine seasons at High Point. He left with the school record for wins at 95 and four NCAA Tournament appearances.
  • Seniors Ashley Gross (defender/midfielder), Bailey Cristian (midfielder) and Mackenzie Cox (defender/midfielder) are the captains.
  • Return 12 upperclassmen. Junior forward Alyssa Walker and junior midfielder/forward Brooke Beam are the leading goal scorers among the returnees with two goals each last year.
  • Richmond has 10 newcomers, including two sophomore transfers in midfielder TJ Anderson (Louisville) and forward Olivia Melnyk (Loyola, Md.).

Last Time Out-Richmond

  • Dropped a 4-0 road contest to Longwood.
  • All four Longwood goals came in the last 16 minutes of the game.
  • Longwood had an 18-9 shots advantange, including 12-1 edge in shots on goal. Both teams had eight shots in the first half.
  • Redshirt-freshman Emily Wigg made her first collegiate start and came away with eight saves.

Scouting UNCW

  • Won its first two games of the season against two opponents on UNCG's schedule this year, 3-1 at VCU last Friday and 2-0 over High Point at home last Sunday.
  • Play at Virginia Tech Friday night.
  • Defender Talia Parrous was awarded the Colonial Athletic Association's first Rookie of the Week. Parrous earned her first career assist against the Rams before helping the defense get a shutout over the Panthers.
  • UNCW and Elon are at the top of the CAA rankings with five goals scored through two games.
  • Sophomores accounted for two goals and three assists during the opening weekend. Forward Morgan Nanni scored a goal versus VCU and contributed an assist against High Point while midfielder Molly McGarry, a preseason all-CAA selection, and midfielder/defender Tara Pak each tallied an assist.
  • Had three different players score the first goal of their college careers last week. Nanni and junior forward/defender Ashley Johnson notched the achievement against VCU, and redshirt-freshman defender Grace Bondurant did so in the 23rd minute against High Point.
  • Head coach Chris Neal is in his first year at UNCW. A 1995 graduate of UNCW, Neal previously spent five months as an assistant women's soccer coach at Arkansas. Before that he was the winningest head coach in Elon women's soccer history with a 90-76-31 record in 10 years.
  • Picked to finish ninth in the CAA Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Return 23 players from last year's roster including seven starters.

Last Time Out-UNCW

  • Defeated High Point last Sunday 2-0 in home opener.
  • Bondurant and redshirt junior Kirsten Bootes each scored a goal.
  • Senior Caitie Broderick and sophomore Sydney Schneider split time in goal for the Seahawks. Broderick tallied one save in the first half while Schneider did not record a save in the final 45 minutes.
  • Outshot High Point by a 17-2 margin, including an 11-2 count in the first half, and had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
