Women's Golf Finishes In 13th Place At 2019 Kiawah Island Spring Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. –UNC Greensboro women's golf (294-307-297) finished its first tournament of the spring in 13th place after the Spartans collected a team score of 898 at the 2019 Kiawah Island Spring Classic. The Spartans on Tuesday finished the third round at nine-over 297 with senior Lexi Kershaw and sophomore Keri Kenkel both finishing in the top 50.

“It was a solid start to the spring,” said Head Coach Janell Howland. “We were just short of the goal we set for this tournament but we still have a lot of positives to take from this week. I'm looking forward to getting home and having a couple days of solid work before we head to Wilmington.”

Kershaw (73-77-72) finished tied for 38th place after she finished the third round at even-par. Only once did Kershaw go over par on any hole, as she recorded a bogey on 17 but countered it with a birdie on 4.

“I played really solid all day today,” Kershaw said. “I did a lot of good things and really didn't make any mistakes. I hit a lot of good shots but just didn't get some putts to fall. It was a good start to the season and I'm excited to keep improving moving forward.”

As for Kenkel (75-76-72), she finished tied for 45th place as she also carded a 72 in the third round. Kenkel posted a team-high five birdies on Tuesday.

“I played really well today and it was good to end the tournament with a good round,” Kenkel said. “I'm proud of the team for fighting it out today and we finished in a good spot out of a really big field. We're ready to get a few days of good practice in before our tournament next week.”

Sophomore Tara Bettle (76-75-75) also finished in the top 100 after posting a three-over 75 for the second straight day. Bettle's round was highlighted by a birdie on Hole 6.

Junior Kendall Dobbins (72-79-78) ended the tournament tied for 107th place after she posted a six-over 78 on Tuesday.

The Spartans were rounded out by sophomore Sara Rydman (74-79-79), who posted a seven-over 79 over the final 18 holes.

UNCG will return to North Carolina for its next tournament – the River Landing Classic – which will take place March 4-5 at River Landing Golf Club in Wallace.
