GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball completes the four-game sweep of UMES, closing out this weekend's series with a 9-4 final at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartans outscored the Shore Hawks 43-14 over the course of the weekend, moving their all-time record against the side to a perfect 9-0.
After giving up a run in the opening frame, UNCG responded with two of their own in the bottom half, grabbing a lead that would last for the remainder of the afternoon. Following walks from Greg Hardison and Pres Cavenaugh, Hogan Windish delivered the first of his two RBI knocks of the afternoon, on a double to right field. Josh Madole would give the Spartans the go ahead run in the next at bat, providing a sac fly to move the score to 2-1.Â
Making his fourth start of the season, Jeremiah Triplett held the Hawks to three earned runs over his 6.0 innings of work. The right-hander came within one of a career-high with his seven strikeouts on the day, spraying six hits across his time on the mound.Â
The Spartans added two apiece in the fourth and fifth innings, with freshman Robbie O'Neal tallying his second career hit as a Spartan with a two-RBI single to left field. Caleb Webster turned a leadoff walk into a run during the bottom of inning number five, advancing to second on a wild pitch, before stealing third and coming home on an arid throw from the UMES catcher.
With the bases empty, Madole delivered the first home run of his career on a solo shot, driving a 3-1 pitch over the right field wall. Madole's long ball makes it six Spartans to hit a homer this year, giving the home team a 6-1 lead going to the sixth.
The Shore Hawks tallied two in the visiting frame of the sixth, but the Spartans once again showed up their opponents with three of their own in the home half. O'Neal recorded his second hit of the day before Webster drew the bases loaded hit by pitch to make it 7-3. A Cavenaugh fielder's choice added the second of the frame, but it would be Windish coming up with another RBI knock. The second baseman singled to center for his third hit of the day, driving in a single run for his second on the day.Â
The visitors added one in the ninth, but right-hander Brandon Stephens closed out the contest while striking out the side in the final frame. Jack Voigt and Israel Cordero each provided a shutout inning in the Spartans' 9-4Â win, while Triplett's winning decision gives the senior a 2-0 record on the year.
