GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team looks to continue the momentum following a 2-1 victory against VMI when the Spartans host Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Mercer University Friday night with a start time of 7:00 p.m. at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
- Senior Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper returns in net for UNCG, as she was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week for back-to-back shutouts to open the season and then earned the honor again three weeks ago for two more clean sheets.
- Among the conference, Tyler-Cooper leads the conference in saves per game (6.90), shutouts (5), and save percentage (.873), is third in saves (69), and sixth in goals against average (0.96).
- Senior Nicole Souply leads the Spartans with two goals and four points, while junior Maddy Gilhool follows with one goal and one assist for three points.
- Senior Ashley Avelino and sophomore Caroline Woods each chipped in a goal to give the Spartans their first home and SoCon victory last friday.
- UNCG was picked to finish fifth in the SoCon Preseason Poll.
- Senior Kayla Campbell was the lone Spartan to be named to the 2020-21 Preseason All-SoCon team. She led all defenders in 2019 with five goals, while being a force on the back line helping UNCG to six clean sheets.
SPARTANS' LAST TIME OUT
- On a night when UNCG women's soccer team sported bright pink socks to kick off breast cancer awareness month, the Spartans fended off Virginia Military Institute (VMI) at home Friday night to earn their first Southern Conference (SoCon) win of the season, 2-1.
- Woods and Avelino netted their first goals of the season, as Souply and junior Gabi Santora tallied the assists.
- Junior goalkeeper Abby Buchholz recorded seven saves in her first win of the season.
SCOUTING MERCER
- Ally Fordham leads the Bears with five goals and one assist for 11 points.
- Mackenzie Gassie and Lana Whitfield each have seven points, as Gassie has scored three goals and chipped in one assist, while Whitfield has put away two tallies and three helpers.
- Jordyn Ebert has played every minute in net for the Bears giving up just eight goals for a 0.70 goals against average and tallying 43 saves.
- Ciara Whitely was named to the Preseason All-SoCon team.
- Mercer was picked to finish third in the preseason poll.
BEARS' LAST TIME OUT
- Ally Fordham found herself with a penalty kick just one minute after entering the second half as she scored the lone goal in the match to help Mercer defeat the Chattanooga Mocs, 1-0, in the 4thconference game for the Bears.
- The Bears outshot the Mocs 20-7, while Chattanooga recorded 10 saves to Mercer's five.
PINK GAME
On Friday, October 1, the Spartans hosted VMI and sported bright pink socks and recognized and remembered those who have passed, are currently battling, and who are in remission from cancer.
