UNCG Hosting SoCon Men's Soccer Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team will host the 2021 Southern Conference championship tournament this weekend inside of the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

As the No. 1 seed and regular season champions, UNCG (13-3-1 overall) earned the right to host the tournament. The Spartans will host a quarterfinal match between fourth-seeded Belmont (11-4-1) and fifth-seeded ETSU (4-7-3) on Friday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. Then, UNCG will meet the winner of Friday's contest on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m.

Admission to both matches is free. Each match will be streamed live on ESPN+.

ETSU and Belmont are the two programs UNCG defeated earlier this spring to win the SoCon Tournament and earn a bid to the NCAA tournament.

This season, nationally-ranked UNCG dropped a 2-1 decision to Belmont on Oct. 16 and captured a 2-0 victory over ETSU on Oct. 30. Both contests were on the road.

Belmont defeated ETSU, 1-0 on Sept. 18 at E.S. Rose Park as one of the Bruins' program record eight shutouts this season. Sophomore midfielder AJ Chastonay, who is tied for the most game winners in the nation, provided the lone goal of the match in the 72nd minute.

Here's a quick look at each team competing at UNCG.

  • Named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season, Drew Romig is fifth in the nation in save percentage (.831), ninth in shutouts, 22nd in goals against average (0.80) and is 26th in saves (64).
  • With its triumph at Eastern Illinois last Tuesday, Belmont (11-4-1) tied the program record for wins in a single season. The Bruins have gone 11-2-1 over their last 14 outings after going 6-1 in the month of October.
ETSU
  • The Bucs feature one of the conference's elite goal scorers in Tarik Panntiolzer (10 goals, two assists, 22 points).
  • Gabriel Ramos has five assists and nine points.
  • Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit (two goals, two assists, six points).
  • ETSU's lone conference win was a 3-0 decision against VMI.

UNCG
  • The Spartans are ranked 19th by College Soccer News and 25th by the United Soccer Coaches.

  • Theo Collomb leads the nation with 15 goals and 35 points.
  • He is one of 16 different players who have scored at least one goal this season for the Spartans.

Mercer (8-7-1) earned the second seed in the SoCon Men's Soccer Tournament.

On Friday, Mercer will play host to a quarterfinal matchup between third-seeded Furman (6-8-1) and sixth-seeded Wofford (5-10-1) at Betts Stadium. Mercer will then take on Friday evening's victor at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The championship match will be at the highest remaining seed's campus on either Saturday, November 13 or Sunday, November 14, with a time that is to be determined.
