GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team finished the 2021 season leading the nation in four statistical categories.
In winning the Southern Conference regular season and 13 matches, the Spartans ended the season as the national leader in corner kicks per game (8.00), goal differential (38), points per game (8.39), scoring offense (2.89).
UNCG was second in the country in shots per game (17.00) and shots on goal per game (7.50). UNCG's total of 52 goals was third nationally. The Spartans were leading the country in that category at the end of the regular season. With 10 shutouts, including one against Virginia on the road, the Spartans were fourth nationally in shutout percentage (.556).
They were sixth in assists per game (2.61) and points (151). UNCG was 10th in total assists (47), 12th in team goals against average (.755) and 15th in win-loss percentage (.750). Overall, UNCG was ranked in the top 15 nationally in 13 of the 20 major NCAA statistical categories.
Individually, the Spartans had four players rank among the top 100 in many statistical categories.
Sophomore
Theo Collomb was second in the country in goals (15), third in goals per game (.086) and points per game (2.06), fourth in points (35), seventh in shots per game (4.00), 11th in shots on goal per game (1.82), and 49th in game-winning goals (three).
Freshman
J.C. Ngando was 13th in assists per game (0.53) and freshman
Joey Skinner was 76th in the same category (0.39). Sophomore goalie
Niclas Wild was ninth in shutouts (nine) and 15th in goals against average (.798).
Here are some additional notes about the 2021 campaign.
TERRIFIC THEO: Collomb was named a Second Team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches. He was also named a First Team All-Region by the same organization and selected to participate in the prestigious MLS showcase. Collomb was selected as the Southern Conference Player of the Year. During a week in which he had five goals and two assists in wins over Clemson and VMI, Collomb was named national Player of the Week by the United Soccer Coaches, College Soccer News and TopDrawer Soccer.
I'M HONORED: UNCG had nine student-athletes named to the All-SoCon team. Overall, UNCG had six first-team selections as defenders
Emmanuel Hagan,
Joey Skinner, and
Marco Milanese joined Collomb, Wild, and Ngando. Earning All-SoCon Second Team recognition was freshman midfielder
Jack Birch and sophomore midfielder
Daniel Mangarov. In addition to Ngando, Skinner, and Birch,
Basile Marc was named to the All-SoCon Freshman Team.
During the season, Skinner, Milanese, Hagan, and Ngando all earned various Player of the Week recognition from the Southern Conference and/or College Soccer News.
EVERYBODY SCORES: UNCG had 13 players this season score at least two goals. UNCG scored a season-high seven goals twice this season in wins over VMI and USC-Upstate.
MEMORABLE MOMENT: UNCG defeated then No. 2-ranked Clemson, 3-1, on Sept. 21 behind two goals from Collomb and a stellar defensive performance. Ngando scored the first goal during UNCG's historic 3-1 win over Clemson, snapping the Tigers' 632-minute scoreless streak. Clemson won the 2021 national championship.
"I am very happy to be part of this game and our program," Ngando said after the Clemson contest. "We played good tonight and like dogs all the time guarding the ball. It's not just about beating Clemson, it's about us and we worked hard for this moment. I am very proud of this victory. People came to this game to watch Clemson because they were second in the country, but we knew we were a good team as well. We walk together, We play together. We are a family."
