HIGH POINT, N.C. - UNCG baseball clinches this weekend's Truist Point series against High Point University, taking the first of a Sunday doubleheader by a final of 6-5. Right-hander
Austin Parsley earned the winning decision in his first appearance of the season, while
Greg Hardison and
Josh Madole each collected two knocks.
Not unlike his teammate
Austin Koehn, who started Saturday's matchup, right-hander
Jacob Curry gave up an early lead on Sunday, before settling in and putting together an impressive performance. Curry allowed two runs in the first before facing just three over the minimum in the proceeding four frames. While High Point grabbed its third run of the afternoon in the top of the fourth, Curry finished the day with five hits and zero walks surrendered, putting himself in line for the win after 5.0 innings of work.
After spotting their opponent a pair of runs in the first inning, the Spartans scored one of their own in the home half, after back-to-back UNCG walks were followed up by a
Pres Cavenaugh RBI single.
The Spartans' biggest spout of offense came in the third, when the side hung up three runs to take its first lead of the day. UNCG had some help from the Panther pitching staff, who had a hit by pitch, three walks and a balk during that inning. Rosier led off with a hit by pitch, with a Hardison single and a Windish four-pitch walk loading things up with still just one out in the frame. Madole put the Spartans on top with a 2-RBI single to left and a bases loaded balk later in the inning doubled UNCG's lead at 4-2.
After gathering a sac fly to tie it in the sixth, High Point scored for a second straight inning to take a late advantage in the top half of the seventh. It wouldn't last however, as UNCG put their leadoff man on for the fifth time on the afternoon via a
Greg Hardison walk. The left fielder would eventually come around to score after advancing to second on a fly out and crossed home on a Windish double that deflected off the third base pad. Windish would score himself on a
Grant Jarman sac fly, giving the Spartans their lead back for a second time.
Recording the final nine outs of the contest,
Austin Parsley earned the winning decision in his first appearance of the year. The righty inherited a pair of runners, allowing one to come home to score, but wouldn't have a run credited to his name in what ended as a 6-5, series-clinching decision for the Spartans.
>> The High Point pitching staff gave up seven walks to UNCG's two, the most the Panthers have surrendered all year
>> Hardison and Madole each finished with a pair of knocks, while the former also drew two walks. Hardison has hit in every game this season and is on a seven-game hitting streak dating back to last year
>> Rosier and Windish lead the Spartans in slugging at .654 and .652 respectively. Windish has a double and a homer in the series thus far, while Rosier tallied two triples against HPU on Saturday
