GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fortunately for the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team, it returns to the pitch immediately when it visits VMI in a Southern Conference match Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Since 2002, UNCG has won 11 consecutive matches against the Keydets, outscoring them 54-2 during that stretch. UNCG hasn't allowed a goal to VMI, in nine of the last 11 matches, including the last four contests. The last time VMI scored against UNCG was in 2016.
The Spartans dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Furman in overtime last Saturday. Sophomore midfielder
Angel Bacho and sophomore forward
Mani Austmann scored goals for UNCG, which held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the game. Despite the defeat, the Spartans may have taken steps forward.
Of course, time will tell as UNCG will seek its first conference victory of the season. The Spartans opened conference play with a tie at Mercer and a setback to Furman. This is the middle game of a rare busy stretch for UNCG, which is playing three games in seven days.
The Keydets will be looking for their first conference win of the season as well. They dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Mercer this past Saturday. Senior
Richard Quispe scored his first goal of the season off an inside cross from sophomore
Peter Sepulveda, his second assist of the season.
Sophomore
Nathan Lam leads the Keydets with three goals. Junior goalie
Broden Schull has 43 saves on the season.
UNCG returns home to host Belmont on Saturday at 5 p.m.
