LEXINGTON, Va. - UNCG baseball needed the doubleheader sweep on Saturday to clinch this weekend series against VMI and the Spartans completed the job with an 11-3 win over the Keydets in game two. The UNCG offense collected a pair of home runs for the second time that day, with
Hogan Windish and
Greg Hardison both going deep in the series finale. Windish and
Robbie O'Neal both had three hits during game two, while eight Spartans gathered knocks in the contest.
The Spartans scored in the first inning for the second time on the day, with
Corey Rosier tallying his team's first knock on a one-out single to right. The outfielder advanced to third on a wild pitch and a groundout, before coming home on
Hogan Windish's RBI single. VMI answered immediately with a solo shot to left, despite starting righty
Brendan Collins striking out the side in the bottom half.
Collins recorded his first five outs on strikeouts, collecting six Ks through his first three frames alone. The right hander collected a Spartan career-high eight strikeouts while finishing his night after 3.2 IP, allowing two runs and four hits in his sixth start of the season.
UNCG used the long ball to take the lead for the second time on the day with
Greg Hardison and Windish delivering back-to-back solo shots in the top of the third. The pair's long balls were the third and fourth homers for the Spartans in the doubleheader, with UNCG tallying two against the Keydets in game one as well. Hardison's bomb made the left fielder the eighth Spartan to go deep this year, while Windish's was his team leading seventh of the season.
The Spartans added another two runs in the following frame. UNCG put the first three men on to start the fourth, with
Coleman Sawyer picking up his fourth hit of the doubleheader, and
Robbie O'Neal delivering the RBI single.
Josh Madole loaded the bases on a five-pitch walk before
Corey Rosier pushed across the Spartans' fifth run with an RBI walk of his own.
The Keydets doubled their run total on a home run in the fourth, before righty
Austin Parsley took over on the bump. Parsley went on to shutout the home team over the next two innings, before VMI tallied it's third solo shot of the night in the bottom of the seventh.
With UNCG's lead diminished to 5-3, the visitors opened things up in the top of the eighth, mounting a one-out rally to score six runs on six hits and a VMI error. After the leadoff man was retired on strikes, the Spartan offense delivered six straight knocks, including three straight RBI-doubles from Madole, Rosier and Hardison. Pinch runner
Bradley Bott crossed home on a VMI balk, before
Zack Budzik drove in his seventh run of the series on an RBI groundout to make it 11-3.
That score would hold out as
Jack Voigt and
Kross Robinson collected the final six outs of game two. The club outhit the Keydets 14-7 in the final nine innings of Saturday's doubleheader, outscoring VMI 24-5 over the course of the day.
>>> Budzik added his seventh RBI of the series in game two of Saturday's doubleheader after driving in four during game one. He's collected nine RBI over his last four appearances, giving him a total of 19 on the year
>>> Windish hit in every game of this weekend's series in Lexington, capping things off with his three-hit performance in the finale. His three hits tie a career-high, the fourth time he's had a trio of knocks in a single contest
>>>
Josh Madole and
Greg Hardison are on four and five game hitting streaks respectively. Both Madole and Hardison drove in runs in each of the Spartans' games against the Keydets, for a total of four RBI in the series, along with two doubles and a home run apiece
