SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Theo Collomb scored in the 57th minute to lift the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Wofford in a Southern Conference match Tuesday night.
Collomb, who was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, has scored a goal in three consecutive matches. Meanwhile, freshman goalie
Niclas Wild made the goal stand up as he notched his second shutout in the Spartans last three matches.
Emmanuel Hagan and
Myson Darden were solid on defense as well helping to keep the Terriers scoreless. Wild finished with five saves and made some key stops especially after the Spartans grabbed the early advantage.
Wild figured in the decisive goal with a powerful goal kick that traveled to midfield. The ball found Sam Coad, who threaded a nice pass to Collomb, who sped up to the ball and nudged it past the Wofford keeper, who came out of his net. Collomb got to the ball from about the 25 yard-line and was able to get the ball into the net.
UNCG earned points in every away conference match this season.
"What I liked is when we didn't play our greatest and below our standard as a group, we found a way to get three points," UNCG head coach
Chris Rich said. "We had a lot of high-quality chances in the first half that we should've converted and if we did the game would've been different. Even in a game where we didn't play well, we found a way to win."
The victory clinched a spot in the SoCon playoffs for UNCG. They begin on April 9 or 10 at the home of the higher seed. UNCG will host ETSU Saturday night at 7 p.m. Both teams are 3-1-1 in the Southern Conference. The winner will finish second and host a playoff game.
