Spartans Drop Mercer Doubleheader

MACON, Ga. - UNCG baseball drops both doubleheader decisions to Mercer this Sunday, putting a wrap on their fourth SoCon series of 2021. Game one was called early after the Bears put up some heavy offensive numbers early, while game two finished 7-3 in favor of the home team. Hogan Windish had a three-knock performance in game two, while Rosier launched his team-leading eighth home run of the year in that same game.

Sunday's doubleheader didn't off to a great start for the Spartans, with the visitors taking a 17-0 loss in game one. Corey Rosier and Greg Hardison both had a pair of singles, as UNCG was held to five hits.

After going scoreless in the first inning, the Bears put up runs in five straight offensive frames before the contest was called in the middle of the seventh.

Price King led the Spartans with four strikeouts after taking the mound for the final out of the second inning. Windish and Pres Cavenaugh each collected hit by pitches during the doubleheader opener as well.

The Spartans fell behind early once again during game two, spotting the Bears four runs during the second inning.

Right hander Austin Parsley entered the contest with two outs remaining in the frame, surrendering a single before going on to retire 11 straight Mercer batters. Parsley tied a career-high while sitting down six Mercer batters on strikes, tossing three straight shutout frames after the second inning.

With Mercer unable to score on Parsley, the Spartans were able to cut into their opponents' lead in the sixth. Greg Hardison led off the visiting half of the inning with a walk, before back-to-back singles from Windish and Spencer Smith loaded the bases. Cavenaugh came through with his team's third straight knock, driving in a pair of runs on a single through the right side of the infield.

The Bears would finally get to Parsley in the seventh, tacking on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half, scoring their seventh and final tally of the contest in the eighth.

The Spartans did mount a comeback in the ninth, with Rosier hitting his second homer of the series to right-center. The late-inning bomb was the outfielder's eighth of the year, putting him just one ahead of Windish for a team-high. His tally was followed by singles from Josh Madole and Hardison, but the pair were left stranded as the series finale ended 7-3 in favor of the Bears.

>>> Windish went 3-for-5 against the Bears in game two, with a double and two singles, while Rosier, Smith and Cavenaugh each had two
>>> Rosier had a pair of hits in each of his games against Mercer this weekend, going 6-for-12 (.500) with two homers. Hardison hit in all three contests as well, going 4-for-11 (.364)
>>> The first six batters in the Spartan lineup were responsible for all 11 of UNCG's hits in game two
