CULLOWHEE, N.C. - UNCG completes day one of this year's Catamount Classic, turning in three of the top-five times in the 5000m in Cullowhee.
Friday started in the 1500m for the Spartans where runners
Shay Soukup and
Colin Alexander led the way. Soukup finished fifth in the field at Cullowhee, with her 4:46.05 beating her previous personal record by more than two seconds. Alexander proved to be the fastest 1500m runner in the Catamount Classic, crossing the finish line in 3:54.15. The junior beat his own career best by nearly four seconds.
Three of the top-five men's 5000m times came from Spartan student-athletes as multiple runners beat the meet's previous record.
Dylan Christopher turned in a runner-up performance with his 14:55.87, setting a new personal best while collecting the sixth-fastest mark in the Southern Conference this spring.
Michael Zapherson and
Thomas Knepshield grabbed times of 15:05.43 and 15:06.59 respectively, each setting personal bests for themselves.
On the women's side,
Ariana Garcia finished sixth amongst the field, running the 5000m in 18:14.36.
The Spartans will return to the Catamount Athletic Complex for day two of the Catamount Classic on Saturday. The UNCG women open up competition in the 400m at 12:50 p.m., while the men will get started in the 800m at 2:05 p.m.
