GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team concludes its 2021 exhibition slate when it visits Charlotte Thursday night. The match from TransAmerica Field will kick off at 7 p.m.
There will be no live stats or video of this exhibition contest.
The Spartans played Appalachian State this past Sunday. There were some encouraging efforts and UNCG will look to build off that effort as it continues prep for its regular-season opener against High Point on August 19 at home.
"Our goal (against Charlotte) is to keep improving, working together, and finding our rhythm as a team," said redshirt sophomore midfielder
Gabi Santora, who was named to the Southern Conference's All-Freshman Team in 2019 after scoring 11 points.
UNCG returns 22 student-athletes from last season's team including All SoCon Second Team selection
Ashley Avelino. She was one of three Spartans who scored two goals last season along with
Caroline Woods and
Maddy Gilhool.
Also returning is
Rachel Rouse, who led UNCG with two assists last season and
Kayla Campbell, who was a preseason All-SoCon selection. Goalie
Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper started eight matches in goal and had four clean sheets.
"I thought our first exhibition against App State went well," Tyler-Cooper said. "We were able to do a lot of things that we haven't practiced in the short of amount of time that we've been together. I know there's small things we still need to work on in terms of finishing opportunities and finding the right pass in the right spots.
"Playing against App State, I saw some good things and some good ideas. I am looking forward to working on those and getting ready for Charlotte. It's going to be another great opportunity to play against a really good team to get us ready for our non-conference season."
Charlotte is also experienced as well.
The 49ers have 18 letterwinners from last year's unusual spring campaign, along with a trio of others who did not see any game action. The roster features one fifth-year player, returning All-Conference USA Second Team choice
Abby Stapleton, and four seniors.
The 49ers went 6-6 and lost in the Conference USA Championship match to Houston.
