Spartans Ready For Elon in Non-Conference Battle

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team travels east to face defending Colonial Athletic Association champion, Elon University for its second of eight non-conference matches on Sunday, August 22 with a 7:00 p.m. start time at Rudd Field.

ABOUT THE SPARTANS

  • Ashley Avelino, a 2020-21 All-SoCon second team selection, Maddy Gilhool, and Caroline Woods return for UNCG, as they led the 2020-21 squad with two goals apiece. 
  • Head Coach Michael Coll welcomes seven newcomers to the field in Makenna NunezJill GinnChloe LausellRachel PoplinMel HerreraAlly Hackett, and Laura Aalmans, while 10 seniors lead the way aiming to get the program back to where it was in 2019. 
  • Prior to the 2020-21 season, the Spartans saw three-straight seasons of 10-plus wins, including the program's 10th and 11th trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2017 and 2018. 
  • Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper returns in net, as she was second in the Southern Conference with a .872 save percentage and four shutouts, and third with a 0.65 goals against average. 
  • Senior Kayla Campbell was the lone Spartan to be named to the 2020-21 Preseason All-SoCon team. She led all defenders in 2019 with five goals, while being a force on the back line helping UNCG to six clean sheets. 
SPARTANS LAST TIME OUT
  • The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team opened the 2021 season with a 0-0 double overtime draw against non-conference foe High Point University Thursday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium in front of the third largest women's soccer crowd since 2005.
  • UNCG saw senior goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper tally her 19th-career shutout, as she totaled eight saves.
  • The Spartans totaled nine shots and three corner kicks, while the Panthers took 20 shots and seven corner kicks.
SCOUTING ELON
  • Elon was tabbed second in the Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Poll, the highest ranking the program has received in the CAA preseason poll.
  • Sophomore Katie Lowe was selected to the Preseason All-CAA Team, while senior Carson Jones was named honorable mention.
  • Jones led the team last spring with her three goals and one assist for seven total points, while three Phoenix tallied three points apiece.
  • In net, sophomore McKenna Dalfonso started and played in all 10 games last season averaging 0.99 goals against with 26 saves.
  • The Phoenix posted a 6-4 mark overall and a 3-1 Colonial record.
ELON'S LAST TIME OUT
  • The Elon University women's soccer team had a strong start to its fall 2021 season as it shut out George Washington at Rudd Field on Aug. 19, 2-0.
  • Elon outshot George Washington 21-5.  
  • Molly Mahoney got the Phoenix on the board in the 39th minute when she found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
  • Elon doubled its lead in the 55th minute when Kayla Hodges scored the final goal of the night to give the Phoenix its two-goal victory.  
SERIES HISTORY
  • The last time the two teams met was September 19, 2019, when the Spartans defeated the Phoenix, 4-3, at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
  • UNCG leads the series with a 15-1-3 record, including a 6-0-1 mark away from Greensboro.
