GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team prepares for its second Southern Conference (SoCon) road game of the season, facing Samford University (4-3-2, 1-0-0 SoCon) on Sunday, September 26.
The 2:00 p.m. EST (1:00 p.m. CST) contest will be played at Shauna Yelton Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
- Senior Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper returns in net for UNCG, as she was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week for back-to-back shutouts to open the season and then earned the honor again two weeks ago for two more clean sheets.
- Among the conference, Tyler-Cooper is ranked first in saves per game (6.56) and shutouts (5), second in saves (59) and save percentage (.894), and fifth in goals against average (0.74).
- Senior Nicole Souply leads the Spartans with two goals and four points, while junior Maddy Gilhool follows with one goal and one assist for three points.
- UNCG was picked to finish fifth in the SoCon Preseason Poll.
- Senior Kayla Campbell was the lone Spartan to be named to the 2020-21 Preseason All-SoCon team. She led all defenders in 2019 with five goals, while being a force on the back line helping UNCG to six clean sheets.
SPARTANS' LAST TIME OUT
- In both teams' opening Southern Conference matchup, UNC Greensboro (UNCG) and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga played to a double overtime scoreless game Friday night at UTC Sports Complex.
- UNCG led the first and second periods in shots, as both teams tied in the first overtime and the Mocs saw the only shot in the second frame of overtime.
- The Spartans earned a corner kick in each of the frames with just two of them resulting in a shot on net.
- Senior goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper registered six saves, bringing her career total to 314.
- This moves her up to second all-time in UNCG's record books.
SCOUTING SAMFORD
- The United Soccer Coaches selected Samford to rank ninth in this weeks' Southeast Region poll.
- The Bulldogs currently have three with six points each.
- Kylie Gazza leads Samford with three goals, while Alyssa Frazier and Mary Raymond each have tallied two goals and two assists.
- Morgan McAslan has played every minute in goal, giving up nine goals for 0.94 goals against average. She has totaled 31 saves recording three shutouts.
- In the SoCon preseason poll, Samford was voted to finish second overall, earning two first-place votes.
- Frazier, McAslan, Gazza, and Taylor Yount were named to the preseason All-Conference team.
BULLDOGS' LAST TIME OUT
- Gazza, Raymond and Kyla Reynolds pocketed a trio of goals to power the Bulldogs (4-3-2, 1-0 SoCon) of Samford University to a 3-0 victory over Virginia Military Institute (2-8, 0-1 SoCon) to open Southern Conference play on Friday, Sept. 24.
- Samford finished the first half with 11 shots, including five on goal. The Bulldogs also had seven corners in the first 45 minutes of action.
- McAslan saw just three shots with one save.
