GREENSBORO, N.C. – Four years and three days after scoring her first collegiate ace,
Kayla White scored her 100
th career ace in UNC Greensboro volleyball team's 3-1 (25-11, 25-20, 22-25, 26-24) win over town-foe North Carolina A&T on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Spartans opened the match with a 6-3 run against the NC A&T Aggies. Four Spartans were a part of the scoring. Jocelyn Carter, Amanda Garvens, Stephanie Meysembourg, and Kayla White scored.
- Jocelyn Carter, Hannah Knier, Grey Breen, and Gabriela McHugh were brick walls on the front row, stopping six balls from getting over the net.
- The Spartans would take the set 25-11, the second largest margin of victory this season behind their 25-9 set two win over EKU.
- In the second set, with the score at 8-3, Kayla White went back to serve. At 8:02 p.m., she entered the century milestone with her 100th career ace and gave the Spartans a 9-3 lead.
- The Aggies went on a late 6-1 run to make it a close set.
- Back-to-back kills from Taylor Robertson and Hannah Knier put the Spartans within two-points of taking the 2-0 lead in the match. White would end the set on a kill from McHugh.
- UNCG and NC A&T were all tied up at eight each. Jocelyn Carter and an Aggie error gave the Spartans the two-point lead.
- The Aggies went on a 7-4 run to take a 19-16 lead.
- UNCG battled their way back to a one-point deficit, 23-22, but the Aggies would take the set 25-22.
- The Blue and Gold opened the fourth set with a 15-11 lead. Kayla White, Grey Breen, Jocelyn Carter, and Hannah Knier blocked four balls.
- A late 3-0 run by UNCG gave the Spartans a 20-14 lead. NC A&T would find momentum and comeback and take a 24-23 lead.
- Three straight points from the Spartans would end the match. UNCG would sweep the Spartan-Aggie tournament.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Kayla White scored her 100th career ace in the 3-1 win over the Aggies. Her season total is 13.
- Gabriela McHugh was named the MVP of the tournament. She finished the three-game series with 131 assists. She averaged 11.91 per set.
- Jenna Wiggs and Hannah Knier earned spots on the tournament team. Wiggs finished with 43 digs and five service aces Knier had 25 kills and 15 total blocks.
- Freshman Jocelyn Carter averaged 1.09 blocks per set. She totaled 12 blocks this weekend along with Grey Breen.
- Stephanie Meysembourg led the Blue and Gold with six service aces in eight sets played.
- The 5-1 start for the Spartans is the best since 2010, when they started the season with a 6-0 record.
