UNCG’s Power Surge Leaves American in the Dark

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After a 50-minute power delay, the UNC Greensboro volleyball team swept the American Eagles, 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-18), Saturday morning in Fleming Gym.

Freshman Daija Jackson earned her first collegiate start in the second set. She made an impact with six kills and one block.

"It was really good," said Jackson on her first start. "I mean going into it I was a little bit nervous, and it came out as a surprise to me but after I saw the warmth and the energy on the team and after I got my first kill, I felt right at home again."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a 20-minute delay to start the match, the Spartans took an early 12-5 lead over the Eagles. Kayla White and Jocelyn Carter led the run with four kills each.
  • American made a late run and came within one point of UNCG.
  • It was a battle until the end for both teams. Hannah Knier ended the 53-minute set with a solo bock.
  • UNCG started the second set in the same fashion as the first; with a 12-4 lead. This lead included freshman Daija Jackson's first two collegiate kills.
  • Middle hitter Hannah Knier was pivotal in the Spartans second half scoring in the second set. Knier scored six points for the Blue and Gold, half came from blocks.
  • Carter and Knier ended the set for the Spartans with back-to-back blocks and gave UNCG a 2-0 lead.
  • It was the freshman duo of Jocelyn Carter and Daija Jackson who got the third set started for the Blue and Gold.
  • UNCG's largest lead in the third set was six points after the Spartans went on a 5-0 run led by Taylor Robertson and Hannah Knier to make the score 11-5.
  • Graduate transfer Kayla White ended the match with an ace that landed in the back corner on the Eagles court

COREY'S COURSE OF THOUGHT

Carlin on playing through two power outages
"Fluky things happen sometimes but I'm proud of our kids for keeping our focus during both outages, but they came mentally ready to go and I'm proud of the performance."

Carlin on Jackson's performance
"Daija has just been a tremendous player for us even in practice. She shows flashes. When she gets the ball her wheelhouse, she's very effective. She had a great performance today."

Carlin on playing NC A&T
"Well, I'm glad that we had a good performance this morning to build off of, but the girls know this is an important match. NC A&T won their league last year. They're much improved and they're well coached so it'll be a challenge, but I think we're up for it."

UPCOMING
The Spartans will continue the Spartan-Aggie Tournament with a matchup against Greensboro foe NC A&T tonight at 7:30 p.m.
