Nick Lyerly fired a final round six-under-par (66) that propelled the graduate student into a tie for second place as the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's golf team came back to finish sixth in the final round of the Wolfpack Intercollegiate hosted by North Carolina State.
Lyerly took aim at the par-72, 7,287-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course, posting three birdies on his opening nine holes, the back nine stretch. Lyerly holed out for eagle on the par-four, 405-yard 16th hole, the only eagle on the hole all tournament long. The graduate student also claimed one of his three birdies on the tournament's hardest hole, the par-five, 549-yard 15th hole. Lyerly finished the back nine five-under-par (31) to enter the top-five on the leaderboard. On the front side, Lyerly conquered par-four, 462-yard fifth hole which was the tournament's second-toughest hole for his fourth birdie of the final round. Lyerly finished the front nine unblemished to claim a tie for second place at eight-under-par.
Noah Connor also posted an under-par back-nine effort, starting his round one-under-par (35) through his first nine holes. The senior opened his round with a birdie on the par-four, 380-yard tenth hole. Connor added his second birdie on the par-three, 135-yard 17th hole to seal his under-par back nine effort. The senior added a birdie on the par-three, 163-yard sixth hole. Connor finished his round posting a birdie in three of the last four holes on his way to a five-under-par (67) in the final round and a 54-hole total of two-over-par (218), good for a tie for 20th place.
Randall Hudson posted a two-under-par (70) final round effort to conclude his tournament with a five-over-par (221). The junior posted an unblemished back nine to start the final round and finished the front nine with three birdies. Hudson birdied the par-five, 578-yard first hole and posted back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes to finish the front stretch two-under-par (34).
Connor Brown finished his 54-hole tournament 11-over-par (227), but posted a final round one-over-par (73). Brown posted four birdies, three on the back nine, with an eagle on the par-five, 631-yard eleventh hole.
Tommy Lamb finished the tournament 13-over-par (229), but also posted a one-over-par (73) in his final round effort. Lamb collected seven birdies with a stretch of four consecutive birdies beginning on the second hole and concluding on the fifth.
Competing as an individual,
Symon Balbin finished the tournament five-over-par (221). The senior finished the final round two-over-par (74) with two birdies. Balbin made a birdie on the eleventh hole and on the par-five, 552-yard third. Balbin finished the tournament five-over-par (221).
The Spartans surged up the scoreboard seven spots to place sixth overall with the second-lowest team score of the afternoon. The Spartans' 12-under-par (276) was four strokes off the low round of the field and stood four shots off UNC-Wilmington for fifth place and five strokes off Miami (OH) in fourth place. UNCG finished the tournament eight-over-par (872).
