SoCon Announces Men's Soccer Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team saw Marco Milanese earn Southern Conference (SoCon) Defensive Player of the Week honors, announced by the league on Tuesday.

Milanese anchored a UNCG defense that held Wofford to just one goal in a 2-1 win to end the regular season Saturday, clinching the regular-season title for the Spartans. The fifth-year senior from Isernia, Italy, was part of a defensive unit that allowed just three shots by the Terriers, just one of which was on goal.

Milanese is a co-captain for the Spartans, and he is the verbal, emotional, and tactical voice leading the team on the field. Since transferring from Akron following the 2020-21 season, he has started in 34 games in the Blue & Gold, while playing in all 18 games this season.

The Spartans have had six SoCon Offensive Player of the Week awards and four Defensive Player of the Week honors this season.

From Milanese
"Winning this award always makes me proud because it means I am doing my job in helping the team especially when there is a title on the line. As always I want to thank you, my teammates, and the coaching staff for helping me perform at the highest level."

The Spartans are currently No. 11 in the United Soccer Coaches National Poll and a No. 3 ranking in the South Region Poll. The Spartans also earned a No. 15 ranking in the fourth RPI report of the 2022-23 campaign released on Monday, Oct. 31, and are currently ranked No. 10 in the College Soccer News Poll and No. 10 by TopDrawerSoccer.
