Spartans Outlast Gamecocks For First Win

COLUMBIA, S.C.- The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team evened the series against the South Carolina Gamecocks with a 5-4 final score on Saturday afternoon.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jared Mathewson was tested early in the game, walking the first two Gamecock batters.
  • He stayed focused and ended the inning with South Carolina swinging.
  • Both teams remained scoreless through three innings.
  • Hogan Windish and Greg Hardison got the fourth inning with singles to right field.
  • Matt Kemp hit a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner and put the Spartans in scoring positions.
  • Windish scored on an RBI from Mitchell Smith to put the Spartans on the board first.
  • Ethan McKay brought Hardison home with a single to center field to give UNCG the early 2-0 lead.
  • UNCG kept the momentum through the bottom on the fourth, only allowing one man to reach base, and to the top of the fifth.
  • Pres Cavenaugh and Zack Budzik got the fifth inning started with singles to right field.
  • Windish got up to the plate and did what he does best: bring people home.
  • The Spartans grew their lead to four.
  • South Carolina wouldn't get on the board until the sixth inning with a single up the middle.
  • Kennedy Jones hit his first double to kick off the final inning followed by a Cavenaugh walk.
  • Budzik hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Jones to third and Cavenaugh to second.
  • The Gamecocks intentionally walked Windish after he got a hit at all his previous at-bats.
  • Hardison singled to left field and Jones scored to increase UNCG's lead to 5-1.
  • The Gamecocks tried to make a comeback but fell short.
  • The Spartans earned their first win of the 2022 season with a final score of 5-4.
