Spartans Drop Heartbreaker at South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C.- The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team dropped an 8-7 heartbreaking loss in the series finale at South Carolina on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Pres Cavenaugh was the first Spartan to reach first base on a Gamecock error and then stole second.
  •  Hogan Windish continued his hot streak with a single up the middle to bring Cavenaugh home and give UNCG the early lead.
  • After getting his first save of 2022 yesterday, Austin Parsley earned the start on the mound.
  • He pitched a solid seven-inning shutout, only allowing three hits and two walks.
  • The Spartan's bats opened up in the top of the second with Rowan Watt earning the first hit of his career.
  • Ethan McKay followed with a single through the right side.
  • Kennedy Jones stepped up to the plate and hit his second double to bring Watt and McKay home.
  • Cavenaugh reached base again and got another RBI when Jones crossed home to give UNCG the early 4-0 lead.
  • Zack Budzik kicked off the third inning with a single. He showed his speed, easily stealing second to put himself in scoring position.
  • Collin Fowler singled to right and got Budzik home to make the score 5-0.
  • The Spartans and Gamecocks went scoreless until the eighth inning.
  • Budzik crossed the plate for the second time on a sacrifice fly by Dallas Callahan.
  • South Carolina answered with one run in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Jones's second double of the game advanced McKay to third, bringing Budzik up to bat.
  • McKay scored on a sacrifice fly by Budzik.
  • The Gamecocks scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
  • South Carolina would win the game, 8-7.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Parsley pitched seven innings without allowing a run.
  • Jones, Budzik, Windish, Fowler, and McKay had a multi-hit game.
