GREENSBORO, N.C.- The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team's eight-run second inning gave the Spartans the start they needed to take a 16-7 win over Appalachian State to open the weekend series on Friday night.
The Mountaineers opened the scoring in the top of the second with an RBI double to right field. UNCG retaliated with eight runs that were started with a single from
Ethan McKay. The bases were loaded after
Matt Kemp took a pitch to the arm and
Zack Mallia walked. App State walked McKay in to keep the bases loaded.
Kennedy Jones doubled to center to get Kemp and Mallia across the plate and
Dallas Callahan to third. Pes Cavenaugh's second at-bat appearance brought Callahan home, 4-1. Jones got home by a single by
Zack Budzik. Kemp's single that brought
Greg Hardison, Budzik, and Cavenaugh home capped the scoring in the second inning.
Budzik's solo home run in the bottom of the fifth grew the Spartan's lead to seven runs, 9-2. He and Windish brought Jones and Cavenaugh in to deepen the deficit, 11-2, in the bottom of the seventh.
App State came within four with five runs in the top of the eighth, but UNCG answered with five runs of their own to make it 16-7.
