Southern Conference announces softball weekly honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After sweeping Mercer this weekend to begin Southern Conference (SoCon) play, the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team earned a sweep of SoCon weekly awards.

Junior Maycin Brown was named Player of the Week, while classmate Morgan Scott was tabbed as the Pitcher of the Week.

This is Scott's second honor this season. Brown was previously named SoCon Player of the Month for February.

This is the sixth-straight week of recognition for the Spartans this season. Jordan Gontram, Blayke Batten, Delaney Cumbie, and Grace Loftin were previously named Players of the Week.

The duo helped UNCG to three wins over Mercer, all only playing five innings. Saturday's doubleheader saw five homers with a score of 15-4, followed by five more bombs with a score of 12-4. On Sunday, the Spartans dominated, winning 19-1 and had a program-best eight homers, tying an NCAA and program-best five in one inning.

Brown hit a perfect 8-for-8 at the plate, with six RBI and eight runs over three games. Six of her eight hits went for extra bases, as she complimented her 1.000 batting average with a 2.500 slugging percentage. She hit a sacrifice fly and was hit by a pitch for a .900 on-base percentage. In Sunday's game, she fell a triple short of the cycle, scoring three times on the day.

Brown started and played at third base all weekend making two putouts with one assist.

She is currently ranked in the top 10 in 12 conference categories: first in batting average (.435) and total bases (69), second in hits (40) and doubles (11), third in slugging percentage (.750), on-base percentage (.518), and runs scored (24), fourth in total plate appearances (110), sixth in walks (13), seventh in assists (51), eighth in at bats (92), and ninth in hit by pitch (4).

From Brown
"I'm extremely grateful for this award and I could not have done this without everyone involved with team 37. My teammates and coaches have pushed me every single day to be the best that I can be and without them, none of this would be possible! I'm really proud of our performance this weekend and our ability to have fun on the field is unmatched!"

Scott made two appearances this weekend tossing three innings and giving up five hits and one run for her 11th win of the season. She struck out six in the 15-4 run-ruled game. In the Sunday matchup, Scott tossed her 13th complete game of the season, striking out seven, while giving up just three hits and one run in a 19-1 five-inning game. This was her 12th win of the season.

Scott leads the conference in innings pitched (117.2), batters struck out (119), batters struck out looking (42), wins (12), appearances (20), and games started (16). She is also fourth in opposing batter avg. (.246) and sixth in ERA (2.97).

From Scott
"This past weekend was awesome! The offense came alive, and the defense did very good! This weekend I was able to keep them off balance and throw my best stuff. Can't wait to keep kicking butt with my team!"

Up Next
The Spartans welcome non-conference Radford for a mid-week doubleheader on Wednesday, March 30. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at UNCG Softball Stadium.
