CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team defeated Penn State 8-4 and fell to North Carolina 8-7 on the final day of the Carolina Classic on Sunday at Anderson Stadium.
UNCG has now launched a home run in 16 of the 18 games played this year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delaney Cumbie started the game with a walk and with one out, Makenna Matthijs blasted a homer to center field for a 2-0 advantage.
- Penn State responded with a three-run home run of its own from Lexie Black to take a 3-2 lead.
- UNCG took the lead back in the top of the second.
- With two outs and the bases loaded, Makenna Matthijs sent out her second home run of the day. This time a grand slam for a 6-3 lead.
- In the top of the fourth, Cumbie lifted out the Spartan's third home run on the day to extend their lead to 7-3.
- The Nittany Lions scored one run on two hits in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to four on Kaitlyn Morrison's two-out RBI single to center field.
- With two outs, Jessie Shipley singled to right field and Grace Loftin doubled to center field to add on another run for a 8-4 advantage in the top of the seventh.
NOTES
- Graysen Hunter threw her first-collegiate complete game for her second win of the season.
- Matthijs went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a season-high six RBI.
- Matthijs recorded the Spartans second grand slam of the season, her third of her career.
- Cumbie sent out her third home run of the season, 22nd of her career.
- UNCG has launched a home run in 15 of the 17 games played this year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- UNCG hopped on the board early as Cumbie sent a chopper up the middle and moved around the bases, scoring on Shipley's walk on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead
- North Carolina attacked early and often in the bottom of the first.
- The bases quickly got loaded and Kiannah Pierce singled to right field to drive in two RBI, followed by an RBI single from Alex Brown for a 3-1 advantage.
- In the top of the second with two outs, the Spartans reacted as Brooklynn Maxwell singled and made her way around the bases on an error by the right fielder on Cumbie's hit.
- UNCG pushed across another run as Matthijs reached on an error to tie the game at three.
- North Carolina went up 4-3 on an RBI double to left field from Sara Jubas scoring Bri Stubbs from third in the bottom of the second.
- Grace Loftin led off the top of the third with a rocket up the middle and Hannah Kincer walked with one out. Maxwell sent out a three-run homer to center field for a two-run lead, 6-4.
- Scott retired the side for the first time in the bottom of the frame, as North Carolina stranded one runner on base.
- Loftin drove the ball to left field to bring home Matthijs in the top of the fourth, as North Carolina answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame for. The Spartans held the 7-6 advantage.
- North Carolina chipped away and had two more runs cross in the bottom of the fifth on three hits for an 8-7 lead.
NOTES
- Maxwell tallied her second home run of the season, fourth of her career.
- Cumbie went 3-for-4, while Loftin went 3-for-5.
- Loftin had the only other RBI for the Spartans, as Maxwell tallied three.
- The Spartans' 14 hits were the most of the season.
- Seven different Spartans tallied a hit.
- The Tar Heels lead the series 50-11.

UNCG returns to Greensboro for a six-game homestand, where the Spartans kick off the week with Boston College on Tuesday, March 8 with a first pitch at 4:00 p.m. The Spartans will then host its third home tournament of the season, starting on Thursday and ending on Sunday. Michigan State, Delaware State, Saint Francis (Pa.) and Elon will travel to UNCG Softball Stadium.
