CHARLESTON, S.C.- The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team scored six unanswered runs in its 6-3 win over The Citadel Bulldogs to open the series on Friday night in Riley Park.
After allowing three runs in the first inning,
Jared Mathewson settled down and only allowed two hits through the next 4.1 innings against the Bulldogs. He had three innings where he retired the first three batters.
After back-to-back walks from
Greg Hardison and
Mitchell Smith,
Pres Cavenaugh hit a bunt single to advance the runners in the fourth inning. He reached first on a throwing error from the Bulldogs pitcher that also allowed Hardison to score UNCG's first run.
Dallas Callahan walked to reload the bases. Smith would cross the plate on a four-pitch walk to
Ethan McKay.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Hardison doubled to left-field to keep the inning alive. Smith cashed in on the double with one himself to tie the game at three.
The Citadel had the go-ahead run on third with
Alex Hoppe on the mound. The second out came off a shallow fly ball to McKay that held the runner on third. Hoppe retired the side, striking out the batter swinging.
A sacrifice fly from Hardison allowed Jones to score the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. An RBI double from Smith grew the lead to 5-3. The Spartans added an insurance run in the top of the ninth with a single from Cavenaugh.
