Smith’s Career Night Pushes Spartans Past Catamounts

CULLOWHEE, N.C.- Mitchell Smith went 4-for-5 in the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball teams 8-2 win over the Western Carolina Catamounts on Thursday night.
 
Smith's four hits are a career-high for the Pickerington, Ohio native.

Smith: "We knew running Austin Parsley out there was going to give us a good start like always, so it was our job to put some runs on the board and we were able to do that."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UNCG scored in the first four innings to take and hold the lead.
  • The Spartan's first run was on an RBI single from Mitchell Smith.
  • Kennedy Jones brought Zack Budzik home on a fielder's choice for his 54th RBI of the season.
  • Two more runs were scored in the third and fourth innings.
  • Dallas Callahan hit a single to right field for Smith to score.
  • GC Jarman followed suit with an RBI single for Greg Hardison to cross the plate.
  • In the fourth inning, Smith doubled for Pres Cavenaugh and Jones to score, 6-1.
  • The Spartans didn't score again until the eighth inning.
  • Jones scored on a fielder's choice from Cavenaugh.
  • The final run was scored by Smith on a double from Hardison.

  • Jones, Cavenaugh, and Smith lead with two runs scored.

"I thought we swung the bat well and had a good approach at the plate. Parsley was able to get ahead early and did a great job doing what he does which is you have to beat him. He's not going to beat himself. He was able to get us deep in the game and Hunter Shuey did a good job coming in. I thought we had a solid overall performance from our guys in a series that we need to win. We have a chance to win the series tomorrow against a good club. We're going to come out and play well tomorrow."

UNCG continues the series tomorrow at 5 p.m. The Spartans will send LHP Jared Mathewson to the mound.
