DORADO, PUERTO RICO - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's golf senior
Symon Balbin stands in a tie for first individually as the Spartans finished the second round of the Dorado Beach Collegiate in third place. The UNCG-hosted tournament is taking place at the TPC Dorado Beach.
Balbin carded a six-under-par (66) as the senior scored birdie or better on six of nine holes on the back nine. Beginning this stretch on the tenth hole, Balbin eagled the par five, 542-yard 12th hole. That eagle was the third-straight birdie or better with the stretch concluding with a birdie on the par five, 502-yard 14th hole. The senior finished his second round strong with a five-under-par (31) back nine thanks to one final birdie on the par four, 410-yard 17th hole. With three birdies on the front nine, including back-to-back birdies, Balbin finished the day with eight total birdies. Balbin moved up two spots into a tie for first at 11-under-par and holds a one-shot lead over two Duke players who are 10-under par.
Three more Spartans carded even-par (72) second round scorecards including
Nick Lyerly who carded a two-under-par (34) front nine score. The graduate student opened the round with a birdie on the par four, 390-yard first hole. Lyerly birdied both par five holes on the front side and earned his third par five birdie on the 12th hole. The graduate student's 36-hole score of four-under-par stands in a tie for 25th, along with teammate
Randall Hudson.
Noah Connor's even-par score came with a birdie or better on three of the Sugarcane Course's par five holes. Connor was one of six Spartans to birdie the sixth hole and one of seven to post a birdie or better on the 12th. The senior carded the second UNCG eagle of the day on the 14th hole, leading Connor to post a two-under-par (34) back nine score. Connor's second round effort elevated him seven spots on the leaderboard.
Competing as an individual,
Connor Brown earned his even-par effort thanks to birdies on all four par five holes. The sophomore added a birdie on the par four, 405-yard seventh hole as part of his one-under-par (35) front nine scorecard.
