Men's Basketball 2022-23 Season In Review

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team concluded the 2022-23 season with its first 20-win record under the guidance of second-year Head Coach Mike Jones. The Spartans finished the season with a 20-12 overall mark and 14-4 in the SoCon, taking the third seed heading into the SoCon Tournament.
 
AWARD SEASON
The Spartans earned two major awards from the SoCon with Head Coach Mike Jones being named the SoCon Coach of the Year for the first time with the Blue & Gold. Jones is UNCG men's basketball's second Coach of the Year after Wes Miller earned the honor during the 2017-18 season. Jones was also named a finalist for the Ben Jobe Award for the sixth time in his career.
 
Kobe Langley was recognized as the SoCon Defensive Player of the Year. This is the Spartans' fifth time earning the recognition in six years, as Isaiah Miller earned it three times (2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21) and James Dickey earned the award in 2017-18.
 
Keyshaun Langley was named to the SoCon Coaches and Media All-SoCon first teams. Keyshaun also earned National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District first team recognition.
 
Keondre Kennedy earned a spot on the Coaches All-SoCon third team.
 
SPARTAN SEASON LEADERS
Keyshaun Langley finished on top for the Spartans with 459 points on the season and averaged 14.3 points per game. In addition, Keyshaun led the team with 90 three-pointers and 57 steals on the season. His 57 steals were tied with his brother Kobe.
 
Kennedy also averaged double digit points for the Spartans with 13.7 per game in the 30 games played, while Mikeal Brown-Jones was the third from UNCG averaging double figures with 10.1 points per game. 
 
Mohammed Abdulsalam led the team with 226 boards during the 2022-23 stanza. Kennedy and Abdulsalam led UNCG on the defensive end with 19 blocks apiece.
 
Dante Treacy paced the Spartans with 116 assists (3.62 per game), while Kobe was second with 111 helpers (3.46 per game).
 
CONFERENCE LEADERS
Kobe Langley was the SoCon leader in assist/turnover ratio (2.58).
 
Keyshaun and Kobe Langley tied for first place in the conference with 57 steals apiece.
 
Brown-Jones led the conference with a .598 field goal percentage (116-for-194).
 
UNCG led the conference in field goal percentage defense (40.5), rebound margin (3.6), scoring defense (64.5), and three-point percentage defense (31.9).
 
UNCG IN THE NATION
The Spartans finished in the top 50 in three categories, including 21st in field goal percentage defense, 35th in scoring defense, and 49th in scoring margin.
 
Keyshaun finished 11th in the nation in three-point percentage (41.9) and 47th in total three-point field goals made.
 
Kobe concluded the season 32nd in the nation in assist/turnover ratio.
 
MILESTONES
Coach Jones earned his 200th career win as a head coach on Wednesday, January 4 with a 73-61 win over Chattanooga at the Greensboro Coliseum.
 
Keyshaun reached the 1,000-career point milestone versus VMI on January 25.
 
Kennedy reached the 1,000-career point milestone at Furman on January 14.
 
A THRILLING FINISH
The Spartans finished the 2022-23 season in a captivating way as the team went out of the SoCon quarterfinal game in a heartbreaking 66-67 loss to No. 6 Wofford on March 4. Keondre Kennedy led the team with a season best 26 points against the Terriers in the tournament.
 
THE WINS
UNCG's 20 wins this season was the first time under the direction of Coach Jones and first time since the 2020-21 season that the Spartans won 20 or more games.
 
The Spartans' scored 120 points against Warren Wilson in a defining 120-48 victory at Fleming Gymnasium on December 18. UNCG made a program-best 45 field goals on the way to the highest single-game scoring output in the school's NCAA Division I history. The 120 points fell two shy of the school standard set December 12, 1983 versus Piedmont Bible College.
 
Over the season UNCG went 5-0 when scoring 90 or more points.
 
THE CONCLUSION
The Spartans look to continue its success into the 2023-24 season under Head Coach Mike Jones. Jones will begin his third season with UNCG at the mark of the upcoming season and has already led the Spartans to a 40-24 overall record.
