Mentzer & Morton Lead Women’s Soccer Past The Citadel, 2-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team opened The Southern Conference (SoCon) schedule on Thursday with a 2-1 victory over The Citadel at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

From Hannah Morton on the win
"My emotion after the goal came from not being able to play for most of the non-conference schedule. Scoring one for this team gives me a huge momentum boost for the rest of the season and I couldn't be more happy to get back on the field with this team. During halftime, we talked about knowing what we can do and stepping up the intensity. We weren't playing to our standards and we all knew what we can do as a unit. We stooped to their level a little bit during the first half and they took advantage when we were down. We threw the first half in the past and got excited to go out and get a few goals to win the game."

HOW IT HAPPENED
An unassisted goal scored outside the top of 18-yard box by The Citadel's Adrienne Trerotola put the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the sixth minute of the game. The Spartans notched nine shots to the Citadel's one in the first half, but none would find the back of the net for UNCG for the score to remain 1-0 into halftime.

Natalie McCullough saved the ball from going out of bonds in the 68th minute in the Spartans' attacking third. She found an open Claire Esse who turned and crossed a low ball into the 18-yard box. Taylor Mentzer met the cross surrounded by two Bulldogs and used her left foot to find the left corner of the net at 67:58.

The score would remain even at one until the final two minutes of the game. With 1:20 left in the contest, Ryen Ortiz slipped the ball into the 18-yard-box to give Hannah Morton an open touch for a 2-1 lead and the game-winning goal.
