Women’s Basketball Begins Quest in SoCon Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team, who received the No. 7 seed, is set to begin its quest in The Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament on Thursday, facing No. 2 ETSU in the quarterfinals at 1:15 p.m. at the Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina.

The Spartans are entering the tournament with a 14-15 overall mark and a 4-10 SoCon record. ETSU heads to Asheville after clinching a share of the SoCon women's basketball regular season title. The Bucs stand at 17-12 overall and 10-4 in the SoCon.
 
ETSU and UNCG are tied in the overall series at 24-24. The Bucs won both matchups in the regular season, winning, 58-48, on Jan. 24, in Greensboro and 52-39, on Feb. 19, in Johnson City. Thursday's matchup will mark the fourth-ever meeting between the Bucs and Spartans in the postseason as UNCG leads the SoCon Tournament meetings with ETSU, 2-1.
 
UNCG is 26-26 all-time in the SoCon Tournament, earning two titles in program history (1998, 2025).

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG concluded the 2025-26 regular season with a 68-54 victory over the Western Carolina Catamounts on Saturday in Cullowhee.
  • Makiah Asidanya was named SoCon Player of the Week on Tuesday after leading all scorers with 21 points and matching her career-best of five three-pointers.
  • Jeni Levine and Tasia Johnson added 11 points apiece, while Jaila Lee chipped in 10 points to round out the Spartans in double-figures.
  • UNCG recorded 12 three-pointers in the contest, marking the third time in the SoCon schedule this season the Spartans have notched double-digit triples. The team also had 12 against Samford on Jan. 8 and 11 against Mercer on Jan. 10.
  • Despite the contest tying on three occasions, UNCG never allowed Western Carolina to take a lead in the game.
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
  • Lee and Levine were both recognized in the 2025-26 SoCon postseason awards.
  • Lee became the third Spartan to receive the Ann Lashley Inspiration Award for her performance on and off the court, while Levine was tabbed to the All-SoCon Second Team.
  • UNCG is leading the SoCon in five statistical categories: assist/turnover ratio (0.92), assists per game (13.3), scoring defense (55.3), scoring margin (7.7) and turnover margin (3.14).
  • The Blue & Gold are second in the league in free throw percentage (75.2), offensive rebounds per game (12.7), three-point attempts per game (23.0) and three-pointers per game (7.3).
  • The Spartans' 55.3 scoring defense is ninth in the country.
  • Levine (14.1) and Asidanya (11.1) are pacing the Spartans in double-figure scoring this season.
  • UNCG is leading its opponents in several statistical categories: points (63.0-55.3), field goals (22.7-19.8), three-pointers (7.3-5.0), rebounding (36.6-34.0), assists (13.3-9.9), assist/turnover ratio (0.9-0.6), points off turnovers (17.2-11.6) and steals (9.0-6.8).
  • Asidanya (Nov. 11 & March 3) and Lee (Jan. 13) have both picked up SoCon Player of the Week accolades for the 2025-26 season.
  • UNCG was voted to finish second with two first-place votes in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Lee and Asidanya were selected to the SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team after both of their stellar performances last season.
  • Head Coach Trina Patterson is in her 10th year with the Blue & Gold this season.
  • The 2025-26 roster features five returners and eight newcomers. Four of the newcomers are freshmen, while the other four are transfer students.
  • UNCG concluded a historic 2024-25 campaign.
  • The Spartans earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time since 1998. The team defeated Chattanooga, 64-57, in The 2025 SoCon Championship, earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
  • The team fell to No. 1 USC in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, California.
 SCOUTING THE BUCS
  • ETSU clinched a share of the 2025-26 SoCon Regular Season title with Chattanooga and Wofford as all three programs collected a 10-4 league record.
  • The Bucs concluded the regular season on a five-game win streak after notching a 46-39 win at Samford on Saturday.
  • ETSU is second in the SoCon in assist/turnover ratio (1.13), field goal percentage defense (29.6), free throw attempts per game (17.00), free throws made per game (11.50), offensive rebounds per game (11.5), scoring defense (45.0) and turnover margin (4.00).
  • Anala Nelson is pacing the league at the free throw line, going 18-for-23 this season.
  • Nelson is leading the Bucs, averaging 11.4 points per game and 2.6 assists per game.
  • Meghan Downing paces ETSU with an 8.3 boards per game average and 2.2 blocks per game.
  • Carmen Richardson leads the squad with a 1.3 steals per game average.
  • ETSU was picked to finish third in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll ahead of the 2025-26 season.
  • Downing and Richardson were named to the Preseason All-SoCon Team.
  • The 2026 Coach of the Year, Head Coach Brenda Mock Brown is in her fourth season with the Bucs and has led the program to a 77-47 record during her time.
  • Following the conclusion of the 2025-26 regular season, Downing was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Year, while Nelson was tabbed to the All-Second Team. Downing and Richardson were both selected to the All-Defensive Team.

FLEMING GYMNASIUM RENAMED BODFORD ARENA
  • On Saturday, Nov. 8, Fleming Gymnasium, home to UNCG volleyball, women's basketball and men's basketball was renamed to Bodford Arena.
  • This historic moment for the department was made possible through a transformational $2 million gift from the Bodford family.
  • This generous support represents the largest unrestricted gift in the history of UNCG Athletics, as well as the first associated with naming a competitive athletic facility.  
  • The University is already familiar with the Bodford name - the Bodford Family Speed, Strength & Conditioning Center was dedicated in October 2020.
