GREENSBORO, NC – Elon's Gary Marsh sank a lay-up with just 4.1 seconds to give the Phoenix a 58-57, come-from-behind, victory over UNCG in men's college basketball action from the Greensboro Coliseum Sunday afternoon.
Elon's Scottie Rice penetrated deep into the lane, before spotting Marsh open on the baseline. Marsh took the pass, went up strong and gave the Phoenix its first lead since the 11:36 mark of the first-half.
Trailing 58-57 with just 4.1 second on the clock, UNCG's Ronnie Taylor went the length of the floor and got off a decent look, but the running jumper bounced off the back of the rim as time expired.
James Maye was the lone Spartan in double figures. The senior forward scored a game-high 24 points. Maye was 8-for-16 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from 3-point territory. Jay Joseph chipped in nine points.
Elon registered three players in double figures, led by Rasmi Gamble's 12 points. Steven Harvin added 11, while Rice chipped in 10. The Phoenix dominated the boards, grabbing 19 offensive rebounds, while UNCG managed just five. In all, Elon out rebounded UNCG, 49-27.
Elon (4-1), which trailed by as many as 12 points in the second-half, kept chipping away at the Spartans lead. The Phoenix fought all the way back, tying the score, 44-44, at the 9:21 mark on a pair of free throws by Harvin.
UNCG (3-5) responded with a quick 7-2 run to push the lead to five points, 51-46, but Elon answered right back, tying the score at 52-52. Maye buried a 3-pointer to give the Spartans a three-point lead, 57-54, with just 2:02 remaining. Yet, the Phoenix would not go away.
Gamble cut the deficit to one point, 57-56. UNCG had an opportunity to push the lead back to three points, but the Spartans were unable to convert on the offensive end. Elon grabbed the rebound and called a timeout to set up the winning score.
UNCG opened the game, grabbing an early four-point lead, 6-2, but Elon answered with seven consecutive points to take a 9-6 lead with 14:42 remaining. The Spartans and Phoenix then traded baskets over the next six minutes. The game was tied on four separate occasions in the opening 10 minutes of the half.
UNCG took control with a 10-0 spurt midway through the opening half. With the game tied, 16-16, Maye keyed the run with five points, including a 3-pointer at 6:32. The Spartans twice led by 10 point, 26-16, and 28-18, but Elon managed to get within nine points by intermission, 31-22.
UNCG returns to action Thursday, December 19, at Delaware. Tip-off with the Blue Hens is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
