BOONE, N.C. - The UNCG women's soccer team dropped its first ever contest with Appalachian State Sunday afternoon, 1-0. The Mountaineers (2-5, 1-1) and Spartans (4-3, 1-1) withstood heavy rains and a nearly 40-minute lightning delay.
The Spartans dominated much of the match, especially the first-half. UNCG peppered the Appalachian State nets, but Mountaineer goalkeeper Breland Meany registered eight saves in the opening stanza.
Despite outplaying Appalachian State, the Mountaineers jumped on the board at the 20:08 mark, as freshman Ann Holladay scored her first collegiate goal, getting help from teammate Jennifer Rudy. Appalachian State, who had only three shots in the first period, held onto the lead going into halftime.
The second half proved to be a more balanced game, as the Spartans had six shots, five of which were on goal, while the Mountaineers had seven, with four on goal. The Mountaineers and Meany kept the lead intact and held on for the victory. The victory marks the first SoCon win for the Mountaineers in the 2002 season.
Appalachian State's Meany received her first home shut-out victory on the year, with a total of eleven saves on the day. UNCG's keepers, Angie Rudy (Sr./Doylestown, Pa.) and Jennifer Stillman (Fr./Randolph, N.J.) combined for six saves.
The Spartans get away from SoCon action this week with their annual battle with non-conference rival Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons and UNCG face off Wednesday in Winston-Salem. Kick-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
