UNCG tops Furman for SoCon tournament title

Box Score

GREENSBORO, NC - The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team captured its fifth Southern Conference Tournament Championship in the school's seven years of SoCon play today with a 2-0 victory over defending champion Furman at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

UNCG's Rakel Logadottir scored the game-winning goal and assisted on a second goal to help guide the Spartans to the championship. Logadottir started the scoring at the 25:10 mark of the first half when she took the ball unassisted and bent it inside the far post from the left edge of the box. It was her eighth goal of the season.

UNCG (14-6-2) padded its lead midway through the second half as Jamie Ableman sent a shot post Furman goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw, just inside the left post. Loggadottir was credited with the assist.

Goalkeeper Jennifer Stillman and the Spartans defense stymied Furman (15-5-2) for most of the game, allowing only three shots on goal. Stillman recorded three saves, tallying her tenth shutout of 2003.

UNCG's Logadottir was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player for her accomplishments throughout the tournament.

With the win, the Spartans gain an automatic bid to the 2003 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship. The NCAA Championship bracket will be announced at approximately 4:00 p.m. Monday on ESPNEWS and can be found immediately following the announcement at www.ncaasports.com.

“I congratulate Furman on a great season. It was a great game today with the best two teams in the conference going at it. A credit to our kids, they played well. They played together and had a very high level of concentration. We are excited to be the champions and look forward to the NCAA Tournament.” - UNC Greensboro coach Eddie Radwanski

“It was very important to score early on them. Our plan was to score on them early and try to hold back a little bit then counter-attack. Our defensive effort was good.” Tournament MVP Rakel Logadottir
