N. CHARLESTON, SC -- Wofford held off a strong effort by UNCG for a 77-73 victory in the first round of the 2003 Mountain Dew Southern Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Thursday afternoon at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Trailing 75-73 with the clock running under 10-seconds, Ray Bristow penetrated and got off a runner, but the effort did not go down. Tyler Berg grabbed the rebound and then put the game away, connecting on two free throws with 2.8 seconds remaining.

The Spartans found themselves down as many as 14-points early in the second-half, but as they have all season, UNCG rallied. The Spartans tied the game on two occasions and had five other possessions with an opportunity to take the lead, but the Spartans were not able to ever get over the hump.

All-conference performer Mike Lenzly and Sam Daniels spurred Wofford to 44-37 advantage at the half. Lenzly hit on 5-of-8 from the field early for 10 points, while the 6'8'' Daniels connected on four 3-point buckets for 14 first half points. Wofford threatened to pull away from UNCG with a 10-0 midway through the stanza to take a 21-8 lead. James Maye caught fire late and brought the Spartans back into the game with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting.

Daniels paced four Terriers in double-figures with 16 points. Lenzly scored 12 points, grabbed five rebounds and handed out four assists. Borders added 11 points, while Lee Nixon chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds. The Terriers shot 41.4% from the field and outrebounded UNCG, 38-30.

Maye led UNCG with 21 points and nine rebounds. Joseph added 15 points, while Josh Gross scored 13. Bristow added 10 points off the bench. The Spartans shot 50.9% from the floor and hit all 10 free throw attempts.

James Maye ends his stellar career for UNCG as the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,574 points.

Jay Joseph ran his school-record of consecutive games with at least one 3-pointer to 32 games.

On the season, UNCG played in 14 contests decided by five points or less. The Spartans finish the season just 2-12 in those games.

Wofford advances to face East Tennessee State Thursday afternoon in the North Charleston Coliseum. With the loss, UNCG's season ends. The Spartans finish the season 7-22 overall and 3-13 in league play.
