GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team scored three times in the first half and never looked back as the Spartans blanked The Citadel, 7-0, in Southern Conference soccer action, Wednesday evening at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
"We played well from the opening whistle", said UNCG head coach Eddie Radwanski. "We took great care of the ball and had tremendous contributions from a lot of people on our team."
Sophomore Amy Carnell (Lake Stevens, WA) started the scoring for the Spartans with a goal at the 16:36 mark off an assist from Rakel Logadottir. Carnell would then record her second goal of the evening at the 78:32 mark in the second half.
Four different Spartan freshmen scored their first career goals this evening. Diana Gardner (Cary, NC) scored at the 30:31 mark when she deflected a clear by the Citadel goalkeeper from ten yards away and followed it in. Carolyn Lindsay then scored an unassisted goal just before halftime at the 43:31 mark. Tiffany Hallenbeck (Exton, PA) was the final freshman to record her first career goal on the evening, when she scored at the 54:09 mark. Devin Beachum (Raleigh, NC), would complete the Spartan scoring, when she scored at the 81:26 mark.
Logadottir, the team's leading scorer, broke the school record with five assists for the game. The previous record of four, was set by Meghan Guarnotta against Salem College on September 21, 1988.
The seven goals were the most scored by UNCG since October 2001, when the Spartans tallied ten against The Citadel. This was also the seventh consecutive season that UNCG opened Southern Conference play with a victory.
The Spartans will next face #14 Duke on Sunday, September 28 at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. The Citadel will host Elon on Saturday at 5 p.m.
